BOILING SPRINGS --- Sandy Creek High School (Ga.) and Heat Check standout point guard Christian Turner (Atlanta, Ga.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Gardner-Webb University and join the men's basketball program in the fall of 2016, announced head coach Tim Craft Wednesday.
"We are thrilled about Christian joining the Gardner-Webb family," said Craft. "He embodies all of the qualities that we search for in a student-athlete on and off the court. He is a very intelligent guard, a coach on the floor and he really makes his teammates better."
A four-year starter at Sandy Creek High School, Turner averaged 13 points, seven assists and four rebounds per game as a junior en route to All-Region First Team honors and an All-State Honorable Mention nod. Regarded as one of the top point guards in the state of Georgia, Turner turned down offers from Old Dominion, Alcorn State, Cleveland State and Big South foe Winthrop for the chance to don the Red and Black at Gardner-Webb.
"Christian is a pure point guard and floor general with terrific court vision and passing ability," said assistant coach Paul Hemrick. "He has great command with the ball in his hands, loves to push the ball in transition and really creates scoring opportunities for his teammates."
Turner is a proven winner, leading Sandy Creek to a 17-11 record last season and a preseason No. 5 ranking amongst Class AAAA teams in the state of Georgia this year. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound point guard also plays for Heat Check in AAU, which was ranked as high as fifth nationally this summer.
Turner is the son of Timothy and Andriette Turner, and has one sister, Candace.
