BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Four players scored in double figures including a career-high by Charlisa Jenkins as the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team defeated Montreat 84-49 in the home opener on Tuesday morning.
Tuesday's game was the second annual Education Day, as the game was played in front of nearly 2,000 school-aged children that made a raucous atmosphere.
All 13 players that dressed for the Runnin' Bulldogs saw actions in the home opener, including freshmen Evelyn Adebayo, Ky'Asia Stanford, Morgan Ackermann, and Mariah Reid that all saw action for the first time in their careers.
Olivia Parker led all scorers with a game-high 15 points and grabbed seven boards, and Candace Brown and Alexus Hill each chipped in with 13 and 11 points respectively to round out the double-digit scorers for the home side, while Hannah Calloway paced the Montreat offense with 12 points, including knocking down 3 of her 5 attempts from behind the three-point arc.
The Runnin' Bulldogs utilized a full court press to begin the game forcing 11 Cavalier turnovers in the first period of play and converting the to's into 11 points, and continued to drive to the bucket, outscoring Montreat 16-2 in points in the paint, as Gardner-Webb jumped out to a quick 23-15 lead after one period of play.
Gardner-Webb opened the second period on a quick 15-0 run, holding Montreat without a basket unti the 6:49 mark, when Dillon drilled one of her three shots from distance. The Runnin' Bulldogs outscored the visting side by a 24-4 margin in points in the pain, as well as held an 8-0 advantage in fast break points and GWU went into the locker room at halftime holding a 51-22 lead.
Niroshka Perez came off the bench in the third period and nailed three shots from behind the three-point arc, but Gardner-Webb outscored the Cavaliers 33-27 in the second half en route to the 84-49 victory.
Gardner-Webb plays its second of five-straight home games on Thursday, when it hosts Wofford at 6:00 p.m.
