November 17, 2015 | Women's Basketball
CHARLOTTE, N.C.- Candace Brown along with Ashley Rininger (Liberty) have been named the Big South Conference women's basketball co-players of the week, announced the league office Tuesday afternoon.
This is the first time that Brown has earned a weekly honor from the conference office since her freshman season, when she was named the Crons Brand Freshman of the Week on three separate occasions.
Brown earned the award after scoring a layup with 1.2 seconds left to lift Gardner-Webb to a 66-65 victory in the season-opener on Friday afternoon against no. 20 North Carolina, for the program's first victory over a ranked opponent and the first win over an ACC school.
Gardner-Webb took a 64-62 lead with 32 seconds remaining when Tierra Huntsman hit 1-2 from the free-throw line, but Jamie Cherry drilled a three-pointer with 7.2 seconds remaining to put the Tar Heels up 65-64, before Brown scored the game-winning layup with just over a second left.
Brown paced the GWU attack with 17 points on 6-11 shooting and grabbed five boards, dished out two assists and had two blocks in the season-opener.
The senior from Hinton, W.V.A is coming off her best season to date in Boiling Springs, as she set season-bests in points (9.7), rebounds (6.8), and assists (2.7) and was the only player for the Runnin' Bulldogs to start all 32 games in 2014-15.
