Brown's Career Night Propels Women's Basketball Past Wofford

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Candace Brown scored 25 points, hauled down 14 rebounds and had 5 blocks to lift the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team to a 64-61 victory over Wofford on Thursday evening in Paul Porter Arena.

The Runnin' Bulldogs had a tough time shooting in the first half as they hit just 7 of their 25 attempts (28.0%) and went into the half trailing 27-19, but came out in the second half and knocked down 12 of their 31 attempts (38.7%) from the floor and connected on 20 of 29 (69.0%) from the free-throw line.
 
Gardner-Webb struggled shooting the ball knocking down just 19 of its 56 attempts for a 33.9% clip, but utilized the free-throw line to propel it to victory, converting 24-35 (68.6%) from the charity stripe.
 
Along with Brown, Olivia Parker and Tierra Huntsman were in double figures for GWU with 17 and 11 points respecivtely, and Parker also hauled down nine boards, while Ashton Fleming led Wofford with 21 points on 9-12 shooting from the floor. 

The game got off to a slow start with both teams having trouble putting the ball through the basket, but Fleming finally broke the scoreless game with a jump shot at the 6:35 mark of the opening period.

Wofford shot 11-29 in the opening two periods for a 37.9% clip, while Gardner-Webb went just 7-25 (28.0%), as the Terriers took a 27-19 lead into the locker room.

Two free-throws by Fleming gave the Terriers their largest lead of the game 38-24 with 6:25 left in the third period, but Gardner-Webb came flying back with a 18-4 run over the remainder of the third period to take a 42-40 lead.

Brown's jump shot gave the Runnin' Bulldogs their largest lead of the game 49-40 with 8:00 minutes remaining in the fourth period, but the Terriers responded with a 12-3 run of their own to tie the game at 53 with just over four minutes left in the game.

Gardner-Webb would hold on to the lead for the final four minutes of the game, as Brown scored eight points to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs to the 64-61 victory.

The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday evening for their final game before the Thanksgiving break, when they host UNC Greensboro at 7:00 p.m.
