Gardner-Webb Holds On For 77-68 WIn Over Southeastern Louisiana

WEST POINT, N.Y. --- Senior Isaiah Ivey (Georgetown, Ky.) poured in a game- and career-high 21 points and Gardner-Webb closed on a 23-11 run to rally for a 77-68 win over Southeastern Louisiana at the Barclays Center Classic on Friday evening on the campus of the United States Military Academy.

Gardner-Webb (2-4) knocked down 48.1 percent of its attempts from the floor on the night, including an 11-for-21 (52.4 percent) clip from downtown, while also converting 16-of-22 at the free throw line. Southeastern Louisiana (1-5) connected on 45.2 percent of its shots in the contest, including a 17-for-33 effort in the first half, as the Lions edged the Runnin' Bulldogs, 35-33, on the glass.

Ivey led all scorers with a career-high 21 points, knocking down 7-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-6 from three-point range to go along with six rebounds. Tyrell Nelson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Harold McBride (Bronx, N.Y.) added 11 and 10 points, respectively, as McBride recorded game-highs of seven assists and four steals.

Brandon Miller (Orlando, Fla.) and Adonis Burbage (Orlando, Fla.) each added nine points in the contest.

Keith Charleston paced the Lions with a double-double, scoring 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds. James Currington added 10 points, seven boards and five assists, while Daniel Grieves chipped in 11 points.

The Runnin' Bulldogs hit seven of their first 13 shots to jump out to a 19-11 lead, opening the eight-point advantage on a three-ball by Burbage with 13:10 left in the first half. Gardner-Webb continued to dictate the tempo over the next five minutes, stretching the margin to double digits at 26-16 following a Poston trey at the 8:38 mark.

Southeastern Louisiana would close the gap over the next two and a half minutes, cutting the lead to 26-24 with an 8-0 run. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the period, with Gardner-Webb carrying a narrow 39-37 advantage into the intermission.

Gardner-Webb would stretch the lead to 49-43 early in the second half before the Lions answered, scoring seven straight points to claim a narrow 50-49 advantage with 14:00 on the clock. After a McBride three put GWU back on top, 52-50, Southeastern Louisiana countered with seven of the next nine points to take a 57-54 lead on a lay-in by Mo Greenwood at the 9:00 mark.

The Runnin' Bulldogs quickly answered with a 15-7 run, reclaiming the advantage and capping the run on Ivey's fifth three of the night with 1:51 left on the clock. David Efianayi (Orlando, Fla.) came up big in the final moments, sinking a tough lay-in and knocking down four free throws in the last minute to close out the hard-fought victory for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

Gardner-Webb will take on the winner of Army-West Point and Arkansas-Pine Bluff tomorrow evening at 7:30 pm in Christl Arena.
