WEST POINT, N.Y. --- Harold McBride (Bronx, N.Y.) poured in a career-high 31 points, and Tyrell Nelson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Dylan Poston (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) added 20 and 18 points, respectively, as Army-West Point fought off Gardner-Webb's inspired second-half comeback in a 103-98 victory on Saturday evening in the championship game of the Barclays Center Classic.
Army-West Point (5-2) knocked down 56.3 percent of its attempts from the floor on the night, including a 19-for-33 effort in the first half, while converting 19-of-26 at the free throw line. Gardner-Webb (2-5) shot 45.3 percent from the field overall, while connecting on 21-of-36 in the second half to outscore the Black Knights by a 59-44 margin in the period.
McBride led the Runnin' Bulldogs with a career-high 31 points, knocking down 9-of-19 from the floor, 5-of-8 from downtown and converting all eight of his free throw attempts while adding six boards and eight assists. Nelson chipped in 20 points and eight rebounds, as Poston drained five three pointers for a total of 18 points.
David Efianayi (Orlando, Fla.) posted 10 points of his own, as L'Hassane Niangane (Chalon, France) and Laquincy Rideau (West Palm Beach, Fla.) tallied eight rebounds and five steals, respectively.
Tanner Plomb paced the Black Knights with 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting, including a 7-for-9 night from downtown, as Kevin Ferguson added a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Kyle Wilson chipped in 20 points while Dylan Cox posted 10 points and a contest-best nine assists.
Army-West Point took the early advantage with a 13-0 run to jump out to a 22-8 lead on a layup by Mac Hoffman at the 11:44 mark. The Black Knights kept pushing the tempo and pressuring the ball over the next several minutes, widening the gap to 38-13 following a Plomb trey with 6:57 to go in the half.
Gardner-Webb would close the gap to 42-24 over the next four minutes, capping the 11-4 run on an emphatic fast break slam by Nelson at the 2:40 mark. The Runnin' Bulldogs finished off the half with another 6-3 spurt to trim the margin to 45-30 at the intermission.
Efianayi and the Runnin' Bulldogs carried the momentum into the second half, closing the gap further to 55-44 with a 14-10 run that was capped by a Ivey trey at the 14:23 mark. The Black Knights quickly answered with a 16-7 run, pushing the lead back to 20, 71-51, following a three-point play from Wilson with 10:08 on the clock.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would counter with a 12-6 spurt, trimming the margin to 77-63 on Nelson's second three-pointer of the night at the 6:15 mark. Gardner-Webb kept fighting, extending the run to 20-12 when Burbage hit the three, drew the foul and converted the free throw to complete the four-point play and cut the lead to 81-71 with 3:41 to go.
Burbage and the Runnin' Bulldogs continued to pour on the pressure over the next three minutes, cutting the advantage to 87-85 on a tough lay-in by McBride with 18 seconds to go before a Rideau free throw trimmed it to one six seconds later.
After Ferguson converted a pair of free throws, Poston knocked down one of the biggest clutch shots of his career, beating the buzzer with a three-pointer and sending the game into overtime tied at 89.
McBride gave Gardner-Webb a 92-91 lead early in the overtime, knocking down a three before Army-West Point answered with an 8-2 run to claim a 99-94 advantage on a trey by Kennedy Edwards with 52 seconds left. The Black Knights would hold on from there, weathering a late GWU push to squeak out the overtime victory.
Gardner-Webb returns to the court on Wednesday evening when the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to Clinton, S.C. to open their Big South Conference slate against Presbyterian College at 7:00 pm.
