BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Longwood capitalized on four first half goals including an own goal by the Runnin' Bulldogs in the 20th minute, to defeat the Gardner-Webb men's soccer team 5-1, in a Big South Conference match on Wednesday evening at Greene-Harbison Stadium.
Gardner-Webb ends the season with an overall record of 4-13-0 and falls to 3-6 in Big South Play, while Longwood improves to 9-7-1, and 4-3-1 in league action. The Lancers host Winthrop on Saturday in their final game of the regular-season.
Prior to the start of Wednesday's match, Gardner-Webb's five seniors-Nathan Cook, Arjun Jung, Nathan Rose, Dustin Peyton, and Craig Swaby -were honored for Senior Night;
The Lancers outshot GWU 17-15 for the match and held an 8-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Mo Jalloh, Will Lambert, and Willy Miezan each had three shot attempts to pace the Lancer attack, while it was Jascha Gluckschalt's four shots from his defensive position to lead the Dogs.
Carlos Canas stopped four of the five attempts that were directed toward him to earn his sixth victory of the season, while William Liles made three stops in defeat for Gardner-Webb.
Just over 15 minutes expired in the first half, Craig Swaby was the receipent of a pass that put him one on one with Canas, but the Lancer goalkeeper made a great diving stop to keep the game scorless.
Longwood would take the lead on an own goal by GWU at 19:09 of the first half and just 27 seconds later, Miezan netted his 12th of the season to extend the Lancer lead 2-0.
The Lancers added two additional goals in the first half and took a 4-0 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Clay Edwards netted his second goal of the season in the 52nd minute for the Runnin' Bulldogs, but Longwood would add its fifth goal in the 86th minute for the 5-1 victory.
Gardner-Webb will now wait to see if it will qualify for next week's Big South Tournament. Coming into Wednesday's match, the Dogs were seventh in the conference standings with nine points.
