Gardner-Webb Pulls Away For 73-53 Win Over Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Adonis Burbage (Orlando, Fla.) knocked down four three-pointers and poured in a game-high 16 points to lead Gardner-Webb to a 73-53 win over Furman on Saturday evening in Timmons Arena.

Gardner-Webb (4-6) connected on 57.1 percent of its attempts from the floor in the contest, including a 66.7 percent clip in the first half, while holding Furman (5-4) to a field goal percentage of 39.2 percent. The Runnin' Bulldogs won the battle on the glass by a 30-23 margin while converting 15 Furman turnovers into 17 points.

Burbage led the way with 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from downtown to lead four players in double figures for Gardner-Webb. Tyrell Nelson (Charlotte, N.C.) added 14 points and a game-high seven rebounds, while David Efianayi (Orlando, Fla.) and Dylan Poston (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively. Laquincy Rideau (West Palm Beach, Fla.) tallied four assists and a game-high five steals.

Stephen Croone paced the Paladins with 16 points and six assists, as Devin Sibley added 10 points. Daniel Fowler chipped in nine points with a 3-for-5 night from the floor.

Little separated the teams early, with Furman taking a 9-6 lead on a Rafferty lay-in before a three-point play from Ivey knotted the score at 9-9 at the 15:28 mark. The Runnin' Bulldogs would answer a Davis trey with a 13-4 run, taking a 22-16 lead on a nifty fast-break bucket by Robateau before a pair of Poston free throws stretched the margin to 24-16 with 6:08 left in the half.

The teams traded runs down the stretch of the opening period, with Gardner-Webb opening its largest lead of the half at 31-21 before a 7-3 spurt by the Paladins closed the gap to 34-28 at the intermission.

Gardner-Webb opened the second half with a 10-2 run, pushing the margin to 44-30 on back-to-back treys from Poston and Nelson with 16:10 to play. An 11-7 run by the Paladins would trim the advantage to 10 at 51-41, with Croone knocking down a tough jumper at the 9:32 mark.

The Runnin' Bulldogs quickly countered with a 14-4 surge, giving Gardner-Webb a 20-point lead at 65-45 following eight straight points by Burbage. He and the Runnin' Bulldogs would hold on from there, closing out the win with an emphatic alley-op slam by Nelson in the final moments.

Gardner-Webb continues its road swing on Wednesday, December 16 when the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to take on SEC foe LSU at 7:00 pm. The game will air live on the SEC Network Plus.
