CHARLESTON, S.C. - Candace Brown scored 16 points and Olivia Parker recorded her third straight double-double with 15 points and hauling down a career-high 17 rebounds, as the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team trailed by as much as 10 in the second half, but used a 15-0 run midway through the second the half to defeat Charleston Southern 62-56 in a Big South Conference matchup on Tuesday evening.
Gardner-Webb won the battle of the boards outrebounding Charleston Southern 52-45 for the game, and the Runnin' Bulldogs continued to drive the lane drawing 24 fouls, resulting in 31 free-throw attempts to just 12 for CSU.
Despite the big difference in free-throw attempts, the Buccaneers utilized their outside-shooting ability to combat the difference, knocking down nine three-pointers compared to just two for GWU.
The Runnin' Bulldogs utilized their frontcourt size to their advantage, outscoring CSU 28-12 in the paint.
Mayhana Dunovant scored a layup to open the scoring for GWU, but back-to-back three pointers by Tatum Jarvis, gave CSU a 6-4 lead with 16:21 left in the first half.
Two free throws by Nayla Long, tied the game at 15 with just over 10 mins to go in the first half, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would answer with a 12-5 run, which was capped on a three-pointer by Huntsman, to give GWU its largest lead of the first half at 27-20, with 6:46 remaining.
The Buccaneers answered GWU's run with a 9-0 run of their own to take a 29-27 lead with 2:32 left, but both teams would trade baskets to end the first half, and would head into the halftime break deadlocked at 31.
Charleston Southern continued its momentum after halftime, starting the second half on a 8-1 run, to take a 39-32 lead at the under 16 media timeout.
Alyssa Mann hit a three-pointer to give CSU its largest lead of the second half, 46-36, but Gardner-Webb answered back with a 15-0 run over the next seven minutes to take the lead for good.
The Runnin' Bulldogs led 59-53 with 42 seconds left, but a three-pointer by Jarvis got CSU within three points with 32 seconds left.
Gardner-Webb would convert 3-3 from the line and it would go on for the 62-56 victory.
The Runnin' Bulldogs return to action on Saturday afternoon, when they host Winthrop at 3:00 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena.
