Gardner-Webb Men's Tennis Defeats Wofford 4-3

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – The GWU men's tennis team defeated the Wofford Terriers 4-3 this afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center in Spartanburg, S.C.

The Runnin' Bulldogs captured the team win by defeating the Terriers in four singles matches this afternoon displaying GWU's talent in singles play. With the win the Runnin' Bulldogs move to 4-4 on the year.

This afternoon Gardner-Webb dropped the team doubles point by losing at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles slots and then GWU dropped the No. 1 singles match going down 0-2 early to Wofford. GWU answered right back though by defeating Wofford at the No. 3- No. 6 singles positions to clinch the match, while showcasing the resiliency and depth Gardner-Webb has this year.

Freshman Yaroslav Prostakov clinched the match for the Runnin' Bulldogs at the No. 3 singles position. Prostakov rebounded after dropping the first set 4-6 to Wofford's Walker Heffron to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 ensuring the victory for Gardner-Webb.

Senior Ernest Alberch started off GWU's singles wins this afternoon at the No. 4 singles position beating Parks Thompson of Wofford 6-4, 6-2. Next to win for Gardner-Webb was red-shirt senior Korhan Ates who defeated Wofford's Andrew Graham 7-5, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles match, while fellow senior Brendan Dempsey also won his match at the No. 5 singles slot in a well played three-set 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win over Parks Schoen of Wofford.

Dempsey also combined with junior Benjamin Kaszas to pick the lone doubles win for GWU at the No. 2 doubles position over the team of Heffron/Thompson, 7-5.

Gardner-Webb's next match on Friday, February 13th at home versus UNC Charlotte has been postponed due to the forecast for poor weather this Friday and will be rescheduled at a later date in the season. The Runnin' Bulldogs are scheduled to play host next to Limestone and South Carolina State in pair of matches on Wednesday, February 25th at 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. respectively.
