Winthrop fought back, getting a stop on GWU's ensuing possession and retaking the lead, 69-68, on a tough lay-in by Tevin Prescott with just five ticks left.
Andre Smith would add a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining after forcing a key turnover on the inbound play, sealing the 71-68 victory.
