Women's Basketball Dominates The Glass In Victory Over Winthrop

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Jessica Heilig scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds, as the Gardner-Webb women's basketball team used its size to outrebounded Winthrop 50-25 for the game, and the Runnin' Bulldogs would complete the season-sweep of Winthrop with a 75-62 victory on Saturday afternoon, in Paul Porter Arena. 

The Runnin' Bulldogs were extremely aggressive on the boards, hauling down 20 offensive rebounds, and converted the offensive boards into 23 second chance points compared to just eight for Winthrop.

Heilig continued to drive the ball to the hoop, which resulted in 14 free-throw attempts, and Gardner-Webb utilized the charity stripe to its advantage, hitting 34 of its 41 attempts, including connecting on 9-10 from the line in the last two minutes to help seal the victory. 

Winthrop played aggressive defense in the first half, forcing 12 turnovers, but the Runnin' Bulldogs took great care of the ball in the second half, committing just five TO's.

Winthrop jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead over the first four minutes, but two free-throws and a layup from Olivia Parker cut the Winthrop lead to four, with just over five minutes gone in the first half.

Winthrop would continue to hold the lead, until Parker converted 1-2 at the charity stripe to tie the game at 13, with 9:22 left in the half.

A layup by Aliyah Kilpatrick extended the Eagles' lead to nine (29-19), with just over five minutes remaining in the opening half. Winthrop would lead by as much as 10 over the final five minutes of the half, but two free-throws by Alexus Hill with six seconds left, cut the defecit to six, and Gardner-Webb would head into the locker room trailing 37-31.

Two consecutive layups by Parker, followed by a basket from Hill cut the Winthrop lead to 39-37, two minutes into the second half, but two free-throws by Kilpatrick and a layup from Taylor Calvert extended the Eagles lead back to six, with just under 15 minutes remaining in regulation. 

The Eagles would continue to hold the lead, until the 9:59 mark of the second half, when Heilig scored a layup in the paint, to give GWU its first lead of the game 52-51.

The Runnin' Bulldogs held the lead for the remainder of the game, extendeding their lead to as much as 13, and would go on to defeat Winthrop 75-62 on Saturday afternoon to complete the season sweep of the Eagles.

Gardner-Webb returns to action on Tuesday evening,  when it hosts Campbell University at 7:00 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena.
