BOILING SPRINGS --- Freshman Destiny Mead (Palm Harbor, Fla.) scored with a free position shot 7:25 into the second half to record the first goal in the history of Gardner-Webb lacrosse, as Old Dominion defeated the Runnin' Bulldogs by a score of 22-1 on Saturday afternoon at Spangler Stadium in Gardner-Webb's inaugural game.
Gardner-Webb (0-1) took 12 shots on the afternoon, putting six on goal, as Mead led the way with six shots (four on frame), to go along with four ground balls and three draw controls. The Runnin' Bulldogs forced a total of 14 turnovers in the contest, scooping up 16 ground balls and making nine saves.
Raygan Hall (Cleveland, Tenn.) and Amy Schmitt (Waxhaw, N.C.) combined for nine saves between the pipes for the Runnin' Bulldogs, while Monique Martin (Tyngsborough, Mass.) and Amanda Steinmuller (Ellicott, Md.) added three and two shots, respectively.
Ashmore Standing and Jessica Liberty paced Old Dominion (1-0) on the day, each tallying five goals and one assist, as Connor Carson added a hat trick with three goals. Liberty scooped up four ground balls, while Christina Rae recorded a game-high five draw controls. Karen Hayde stopped five of the six shots she faced in 55 minutes of action for the Lady Monarchs.
Old Dominion took control early, scoring six goals in the first 15 minutes and carrying a 13-goal lead into halftime. Two early strikes by the Lady Monarchs pushed the margin to 15 before Mead struck back for Gardner-Webb, scoring the first goal in program history from the free position spot at the 7:25 mark of the second half.
The Lady Monarchs would add a handful of late goals to equal the final margin of 22-1.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Friday, February 20 when the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to Greenville, S.C. to take on fellow first-year program Furman at 5:00 pm.
