DAVIDSON, N.C.– The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team traveled to Davidson, N.C. this afternoon dropping their match 7-0 to the Davidson Wildcats at the Knobloch Tennis Center.
The Runnin' Bulldogs fell behind early in the match as Davidson captured the match doubles point winning at all three doubles positions. However, sophomore Catherine White and freshman Sarah Rieckmann played a tough match against Davidson at the No. 3 positions forcing a match tiebreak before eventually dropping the match to the Davidson team of Todd/Stein 7-6(7-4).
The Wildcats swept all of the singles matches today as well. At the No. 1 singles position Elaina Cummer defeated Yasmin Doost 6-1, 6-1, while at the No. 2 position Rokia Sacko dropped her match to Anna Feaster 6-0, 6-1.
Freshman Stina Magnusson continued to play well at the No. 3 singles position today playing Sarah Stein in a very close match but Stein would walk away the winner defeating Magnusson 6-1, 4-6, 1-0(11-9). The other freshman in GWU's lineup this afternoon was Rieckmann she lost her match at the No. 4 singles slot 6-1, 6-1 to Davidson's Jenna Brunner.
Gardner-Webb sophomore Catherine White dropped her No. 5 singles match 6-4, 6-3 to Ava Todd, with her sophomore counterpart Mary Walker Mixon forcing a tiebreak in the second set of her No. 6 singles match but losing the match, 6-2, 7-6(7-4), to Cassidy Shell from Davidson.
This afternoon's outcome moves Gardner-Webb to 2-1 so far on the season with the Runnin' Bulldogs looking to bounce back in their next match.
The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team will open up their Big South Conference season this coming Wednesday, February 18th, when the Runnin' Bulldogs will play host to Presbyterian College at 2:00 p.m in Boling Springs, N.C.
