Softball Drops Final Game Of Samford Classic

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-Kellie Beres, Ashley Wark, and Jill Blank each talled a hit, but the Gardner-Webb softball team (1-7) dropped the final game of the Samford Classic, 6-0, to host Samford University (8-2) on Sunday afternoon.

Gardner-Webb playing its fourth game in the past three days, had trouble mounting much offense, as Grey Adams limited the Runnin' Bulldogs to just three hits over five innings.

Beres started the game off on a high note for GWU, reaching base on a bunt, and Megan Gibbons sacrificed Beres over to second base, as the Runnin' Bulldogs would have a runner in scoring position with just one out. Rachel Cumiskey hit a rocket up the middle, but Adams gloved the line drive for the second out, and Harris struck out to end the inning.

Megan Dowdy led off the bottom of the first with a single to center field, and was followed by Shelby Maze, who grounded out to Gibbons, but allowed Dowdy to advance to second base. Carolina Wilder roped an RBI single to center field, and Samford would take a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.

The Bulldogs would plate six runs in the bottom of the second, to extend their lead to seven after two innings of play.

Gardner-Webb had some life in the top of the third, as the Runnin' Bulldogs had runner on second and third with nobody out. Gibbons smashed the ball right to Adams, who threw the ball to home plate for the force out, and Abby Sweeney proceeded to toss it to first, to complete the double play. Cumiskey grounded out to third base to end the threat for GWU in the bottom of the third.

Caitlin Bice launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth, and Samford would go on to take the 9-0 victory in five innings.

Gardner-Webb returns to action on Tuesday, when it travels to Orangeburg, S.C. to face South Carolina State for a doubleheader. First pitch for Tuesday's matchup is scheduled for 1:00 p.m start.
