FINAL TEAM RESULTS (PDF)
WINSTON-SALEM – Gardner-Webb's men finished fourth and the women took sixth at the 2015 Big South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at JDL Fast Track.
The GWU men finished 30 points ahead of fifth-place UNC Asheville with 79 team points by the end of the final day of competition. The women edged Charleston Southern by just over six points for sixth position with 43.83 team points over two days.
Jordan Smith followed his Big South championship in the shot put with an All-Big South Conference effort in the weight throw – finishing second on Friday with a personal-record distance of 17.49 meters (57'04.75").
Nathan Padfield followed with a toss of 17.07 meters to finish third and Carson Sears took fourth place with a throw of 16.70 meters – as Gardner-Webb accounted for a strong 19 team points in the event.
Josh Wemobula also earned All-Big South Conference honors, finishing third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.50 seconds – four spots ahead of newcomer Ralph Jolly, who earned two team points with a time of 9.26 seconds in seventh position.
The men's 4x400m relay squad posted a third-place, and All-Big South finish with a time of 3:25.09 seconds. The quartet of Martin, Crawford, Woodard and Darien Evans-Hensley finished just two one-hundredths of a second behind first-place Liberty in a tight race.
Malik Crawford took fourth in the men's 60m dash finals, scoring five team points with a finish in 7.05 seconds. He followed with a fourth-place post in the 200m dash finals, taking five more team points with a run of 22.65 seconds – missing his personal best in the event by just three one-hundredths of a second.
Marquel Woodard narrowly missed All-Big South Conference honors in the 400m dash, finishing fourth with a time of 50.66 seconds. Joseph Martin accounted for a team point as well, taking eighth with a time of 51.75 seconds.
Seaver Wait and Ben Bell each scored in the high jump, with Wait taking sixth place (1.85 meters) and Bell following suit with the same height.
Bell took fourth in the heptathlon with a career-best total of 4,636 points in the event. It was one of five new personal records established by Bell during the two-day event.
The men's distance medley relay team of Evans-Hensley, Joshua Parks, Aaron Cronk and Christopher Lile finished sixth on Friday to earn three team points.
Kayin Mujahid scored eight team points with a solid finish in the women's high jump, clearing the bar at 1.65m (5'05") – just one inch off the championship height.
Gardner-Webb had three women score in the weight throw Friday, getting a fourth-place finish from Sarah Mitchell with a personal record toss of 16.69 meters. GWU got a sixth-place finish from Krista Chauvin (15.80 meters) and an eighth-place spot from Diamond Reese (15.21 meters).
Claire Cates took sixth and scored three team points in the 5,000m run, crossing the line in 18:15.34 – a new personal record and nearly 1:20 faster than her mark last season at the Big South indoor meet, an impressive improvement in 12 months.
Sarah Perkins scored points in the 400m run, taking home seventh with a time of 58.34 seconds – just off her personal best set in the preliminaries (58.24).
The 4x400m relay team of Perskins, Kayin Mujahid, Jordan Davis and Ivy Harris took eighth to score points, clocking a time of 4:01.33 in the finals. The distance medley relay squad also took eighth with a collection of talent featuring Cates, Harris, Michaela Williams and Gabby Cortese.
Gardner-Webb will open up its outdoor season on March 19 at the Charlotte 49er Invitational.
