Second Half Burst Lifts Fresno State Over Gardner-Webb, 20-6

BOILING SPRINGS --- Emma Rose (Weston, Fla.) tallied a team—high two goals and one assist to lead the way for Gardner-Webb on Friday afternoon, as Fresno State scored six times in a four minute stretch midway through the second half to pull away with a 20-6 victory over the Runnin' Bulldogs at Spangler Stadium.

Gardner-Webb (0-3) failed to put a shot on goal only once on the afternoon, scoring six goals and forcing eight saves out of its 15 attempts. Fresno State (1-2) controlled 20-of-28 in the contest while converting 10-of-11 clear attempts. The Bulldogs attempted a total of 36 shots in the contest, scoring 20 goals and forcing nine saves.

Rose paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with two goals and one assist, accounting for a season-high three points, as Amanda Steinmuller (Ellicott, Md.), Lindsey Lippert (Syracuse, N.Y.), Alanna Costigan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Destiny Mead (Palm Harbor, Fla.) each added a goal. Steinmuller also added an assist while Brooke Fernandes (Greensboro, N.C.) caused three turnovers. Raygan Hall (Cleveland, Tenn.) made nine saves, caused three turnovers and scooped up five ground balls, as Monique Martin (Tyngsborough, Mass.) controlled four draws.

Anjelica Fuccilo led the way for Fresno State with seven goals and two assists, while Caroline Dineen-Carlson, Kyleigh Westgarth, and Marcy Levatino each added a hat trick. Westgarth and Logan Eisenger both tallied four draw controls, as Fuccilo, Nicole Ortlieb and Ariel Ross each caused two turnovers. Meganne Weissenfels and Brooke Filgo combined for eight saves.

Fresno State started off strong, scoring the game's first seven goals to take an early 7-0 lead before Gardner-Webb responded, closing the gap to 8-3 following two quick strikes by Lippert and Mead with 5:29 to go in the first half. The Bulldogs answered with three goals of their own, pushing the margin to 11-3 at the 2:24 mark. A late strike by Rose would trim the margin to 11-4 just before the intermission.

The Runnin' Bulldogs opened the second half with two more goals, cutting the lead to 11-6 at the 24:35 mark following strikes by Costigan and Rose. Fresno State would answer with a six goal outburst over the next four minutes, stretching the margin to 17-6 before netting a trio of late goals to equal the final score of 20-6.

Gardner-Webb returns to action on Sunday, March 1 when the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to Blacksburg, Va. to take on Virginia Tech at 1:00 pm.
