FARMVILLE, Va. --- Gardner-Webb placed five players in double figures, including an 18-point performance from Adonis Burbage (Orlando, Fla.), while knocking down 16-of-29 from downtown in an 87-78 Big South Conference win over Longwood on Tuesday evening.
With the win, Gardner-Webb (15-9, 7-4 Big South) moves into a five-way tie for third in the Big South standings with UNC Asheville, Winthrop, Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina, which all sit one game behind co-leaders High Point and Radford.
Gardner-Webb shot 57.7 percent from the floor on the night, including a blistering 55.2 percent mark from long range, while dominating the battle on the glass by a 39-22 margin. The Runnin' Bulldogs recorded a field goal percentage of 60.7 percent in the second half while outscoring the Lancers in the paint, 32-20.
Jerome Hill (Adel, Ga.) led the way for Gardner-Webb with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, moving into fourth on the program's Division I single-season scoring list while surpassing 1,100 points for his career.
Burbage connected on six three-pointers to add 18 points, as Harold McBride (Bronx, N.Y.) poured in 15 points with a 5-for-8 night from the floor. Tyrell Nelson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Dylan Poston (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) each chipped in 12 points. Tyler Strange (Leominster, Mass.) dished out a game-high nine assists, jumping into fourth all-time in Big South history with 575 career dimes.
Shaq Johnson paced the Lancers with 21 points and five boards, knocking down 4-of-6 from downtown, as Quincy Taylor and Kanayo Obi-Rapu each added 15 points. Leron Fisher chipped in 11 points and three assists for Longwood.
Gardner-Webb started off strong, jumping out to an early 9-5 lead on a lay-in by Hill before Longwood countered with a 5-0 spurt to claim a narrow 10-9 advantage. The Lancers would push the margin to 23-17 before the Runnin' Bulldogs responded, evening the tally at 23-23 with back-to-back treys by McBride, the second of which coming at the 7:53 mark.
Longwood answered with an 8-2 spurt, retaking the lead on an open three by Johnson that stretched the margin to 31-25 with 5:18 left on the clock. Gardner-Webb quickly countered, closing the half on a 13-6 run to take a 38-37 advantage into the intermission on a last-second three by McBride.
The Runnin' Bulldogs carried the momentum into the second half, starting the period with a 10-0 run to widen the gap to 48-37 on a Burbage trey with 17:53 to play. Longwood closed the gap to 54-48 with an 11-6 spurt, capping the stretch with a three from Obi-Rapu at the 14:34 mark.
Gardner-Webb responded with a 20-8 surge, pushing the advantage to 74-56 before Longwood countered with an 8-0 run, cutting the margin to 74-64 on a Johnson trey at with 7:26 to go. The Runnin' Bulldogs held the Lancers at arm's length for the next five and a half minutes, stretch the lead to as many as 13 en route to the 87-78 victory.
Gardner-Webb returns to the court on Friday evening the Runnin' Bulldogs host Campbell in Big South play at 7:00 pm in Paul Porter Arena. The Camels defeated Gardner-Webb, 78-59, in Buies Creek, N.C. on January 26 in the teams' first meeting of the season.
