BOILING SPRINGS, N.C – The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team defeated Limestone College today 7-0 in their season opener and first match of the year in Boiling Springs, N.C.
GWU got off to a hot start winning all three of their doubles matches and followed that up by winning all six singles matches propelling them to the 7-0 sweep of matches against the Saints.
Rokia Sacko and partner Teodora Stanciu picked up the first singles win at the No. 2 position defeating the Saints team of Boulbin/Pinate in commanding fashion 8-1. Senior Yasmin Doost and freshman Stina Magnusson teamed up at the No. 1 spot to capture the doubles point for the Runnin' Bulldogs with an 8-3 over Limestone's Hopkins/Varela.
The sophomore team of Mary Walker Mixon and Catherine White captured their No. 3 doubles match with an 8-6 victory over Janin/Moreira from Limestone.
The Runnin' Bulldogs would then go on to sweep singles play. Doost won convincingly at the No. 1 position 6-2, 6-2 over Manon Janin. Sacko won at the No. 2 singles slot coming from behind in the second set to win 6-4, 6-4 over Alexandra Boulbin.
The freshman Magnusson and Rieckmann won their first collegiate singles matches at the No.3 (6-3, 7-5) and No. 4 (6-4, 6-4) spots respectively. While the sophomore doubles team of White and Mixon also rounded out singles play winning at the No. 5 (6-1, 6-3) and No. 6 (6-3, 6-4) singles positions completing the 7-0 sweep for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Gardner-Webb women's tennis will return to action next this coming Saturday, February 7th when the Runnin' Bulldogs will host Erskine College with the match beginning at 1 p.m.
