Men's Tennis Utilizes Veteran Leadership to Defeat Davidson, 4-3

DAVIDSON, N.C  – The GWU men's tennis team behind four singles victories defeated Davidson College 4-3 this evening at the Knobloch Tennis Center on the campus of Davidson College in Davidson, N.C.

Gardner-Webb moves to 3-2 overall on this young season with the win over the Wildcats relying heavily on veteran leadership and senior acumen to ensure the victory for GWU this evening.

The Runnin' Bulldogs completed the victory over Davidson by earning four singles wins, three of which came from Gardner-Webb seniors. Senior Ernest Alberch won over Davidson's David Hager 6-4, 6-4 in his No. 4 singles match. Red-shirt senior Korhan Ates also won 6-4, 6-1 defeating Jordan Hart of Davidson in the No. 5 singles spot, while senior and all around solid player Brendan Dempsey rounded out the trio of seniors, winning his No. 6 Singles match 6-3, 6-4 over the Wildcat's Evan Watkins.

Junior Nikita Zverkov's was the fourth singles victory the Runnin' Bulldogs picked up this evening. Zverkov continued his strong play as of late by defeating Artem Khrapko of Davidson tonight 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 2 singles slot.

Gardner-Webb added on one doubles victory this evening in the No. 1 doubles position. Zverkov and Alberch teamed up to hand the Davidson team of Riazzi/Watkins and commanding 6-0 defeat.

The GWU men's tennis team will play next this Saturday, February 7th when the team will travel to Clemson, S.C. where they will face off against the #34 nationally ranked Clemson Tigers.
