BOILING SPRINGS --- Jerome Hill (Adel, Ga.) recorded career-highs in three categories, including a contest-best 20 rebounds, and Harold McBride (Bronx, N.Y.) poured in 20 points to lead Gardner-Webb to a 73-65 come-from-behind overtime victory over Campbell on Friday night in Big South Conference action.
With the win, Gardner-Webb (16-9, 8-4 Big South) moves into a five-way tie for second in the conference standings alongside Radford, Charleston Southern, UNC Asheville and Winthrop – all sitting just half a game back of High Point in the loss column.
Gardner-Webb shot 38.6 percent from the floor on the night, including a 10-for-24 clip in the second half, while converting 25-of-35 at the line overall and 13-of-17 in overtime. Campbell (9-16, 3-9 Big South) knocked down 45.1 percent of its attempts from the field in the contest, including a 47.8 percent clip in the second half, as the Runnin' Bulldogs won the battle on the glass by a 40-32 margin and converted 21 Campbell turnovers into 21 points.
Hill led the way for Gardner-Webb with 24 points and a career-high 20 rebounds, shooting 5-for-11 from the floor, while setting new personal bests in both free throws made and attempted with a 14-for-21 night at the charity stripe. His first career 20-rebound performance also lifts Hill into first on the program's Division I rebounding list with 666 career boards.
McBride added a career-best 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting while knocking down each of his eight free throw attempts. Tyrell Nelson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Adonis Burbage (Orlando, Fla.) each chipped in nine points, while Tyler Strange (Leominster, Mass.) posted eight points to move into ninth on the school's Division I all-time scoring list. The 5-foot-10 floor general also dished out six assists.
Campbell placed three players in double figures, led by D.J. Mason with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Andrew Ryan and Kyre' Hamer added 15 and 14 points, respectively, while Reco McCarter chipped in seven points and a team-high eight boards.
The Camels came out strong, opening an early 8-2 lead before Gardner-Webb responded, stringing together a 10-3 run that was capped by a Burbage trey with 7:28 left in the half. Campbell would answer with a 10-0 spurt of its own, reclaiming the advantage at 21-18 following a McCarter slam at the 3:41 mark.
A 4-3 spurt by the Camels ended the half, sending Campbell into the intermission with a 25-21 advantage.
Campbell continued to dictate the tempo in the early moments of the second half, pushing the margin to 31-21 with a 6-0 spurt that was capped by a Hamer lay-in at the 17:10 mark.
Gardner-Webb would fight back with an 18-14 run, cutting the lead to six at 45-39 following a clutch three-point play by Hill with 6:39 to play. Campbell answered with eight of the next 13 points, pushing the margin back to nine on a Hamer jumper at the 2:44 mark.
The Runnin' Bulldogs refused to give in, trimming the lead to 53-48 on a long-range bomb by Strange with 1:37 to go. Hill would cut it to one with a pair of free throws, trimming Campbell's lead to 53-52 with just 32 ticks left.
After a McCarter free throw stretched the lead back to two, Strange then delivered perhaps his most critical play of the night, driving to the rack and sinking a tough lay-up to even the tally at 54-54 and send the game into overtime.
The Runnin' Bulldogs turned it on in the overtime period, scoring the frame's first 11 points to take a 65-54 advantage with a Hill bucket at the 1:29 mark. Campbell put the pressure on Gardner-Webb with a late push, cutting the lead to 70-65 with back-to-back treys from Luke Moyer and Ryan, the second of which coming with 20 ticks left.
A trio of free throws from Strange and Hill capped the night, securing the 73-65 victory for the Runnin' Bulldogs and lifting Gardner-Webb into a five-way tie for second in the Big South with six games to play.
