Men's Tennis Falls 4-0 at #34 Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C.  – The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team faced off against the #34 nationally ranked Clemson Tigers falling 4-0 at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center in Clemson, S.C.

Gardner-Webb started it all off by winning the No. 3 doubles match. The GWU all freshman team of Yaroslav Prostakov and Adam Schmidt defeated Clemson's team of Robert Dudley/Ryan McMullan 6-2 to claim the match. Clemson would claim the next doubles match at the No. 2 spot with Hampton Drake/Christian Harris defeating Gardner-Webb junior Benjamin Kaszas and red-shirt freshman Paul Hogan 6-4.

In the decisive doubles match senior Ernest Alberch and junior Nikita Zverkov forced the Clemson team of Alejandro Augusto/Hunter Harris to a match tie break playing extremely well against a team that included the #60 ranked player in the country Augusto. Alberch and Zverkov came up just short dropping the match 7-6 (7-3) in the tiebreak securing the doubles point for the Tigers.

Clemson would go on to win singles matches at the No. 2, 3 and 5 singles positions to win the match and improve their record to 3-3 on the year, while Gardner-Webb would also move to 3-3 overall with the loss this morning.

With the match decided at 4-0 three singles matches went unfinished with the Prostakov leading at the No. 4 spot (3-6, 6-3, 2-1) and Korhan Ates winning at the No. 6 slot (6-4, 5-4), while Kaszas was playing a very competitive match at the No. 1 position (6-3, 3-6, 1-2). 

The Runnin' Bulldogs will travel back to Boiling Springs, N.C. this afternoon and have a quick turn around as they are set to face off against the #18 nationally ranked Wake Forest University tomorrow Sunday, February 7th at 6:00 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.
