Woodard Paces Another Strong Day For Gardner-Webb In East Tennessee

FINAL RESULTS (PDF)

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Freshman Marquel Woodard dashed to a second-place finish in the 800m run Saturday, highlighting another strong day for Gardner-Webb at the ETSU Buccaneer Invitational at Mountain States Health Alliance Athletics Center.

Woodard broke his own personal record with a time of 1:57.74, finishing a close second to The Citadel's Darrell Hayden. The run by Woodard is the sixth-best effort in program history indoors – and is the eighth-best time in the Big South Conference so far this season.

It was the first of two top-10 finishes for Woodard Saturday. He also ran the second leg on the men's 4x400m relay team that took 10th out of 29 teams with a time of 3:24.35. Joseph Martin, Woodard, Malik Crawford and Darien Evans-Hensley teamed up for that effort

Overall, Gardner-Webb posted seven top-10 finishes in Saturday's final day of competition.

Jordan Smith finished second in the men's shot put, shattering his own personal mark with a distance of 15.75m (51'8.25"). Smith topped his previous record on his fourth and final attempt of the day, finishing just two feet out of first place.

A.J. White took fourth in the same event, getting his best distance of the day on his final attempt – going 15.26m (50'0.75"). Clay Hamilton also recorded a personal best, finishing 13th with a distance of 13.91m (45'7.75").

Seaver Wait was sixth in the men's high jump, clearing a height of 1.97m (6'5.5") – which narrowly missed his personal record of 1.98m set earlier this season at Appalachian State.

Ben Bell finished eighth in the men's heptathlon overall, but won the men's 1,000m run in the competition, crossing the line in 2:56.22 to score 702 points. He finished sixth in the 60m hurdles (9.10 seconds) and ninth in the pole vault to take eight overall in the final standings with 4,449 points – just 21 points out of seventh position.

The point total was the second best of Bell's career, just off his record of 4,574 points set at the 2014 Big South Indoor Championships.

Christopher Lile finished 10th in the men's 3,000m run with a personal-record time of 9:24.76, topping his previous mark by nearly 30 seconds.

Gabby Cortese broke out with an impressive performance as well, running in the seeded women's 3,000m race. The freshman clocked a personal-record time of 10:38.38 to finish in 13th position – just off a top-10 pace.

Gardner-Webb will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Lynchburg, Va., for the Liberty Quad Meet.
