BOILING SPRINGS, N.C – The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team defeated Erskine College this afternoon 7-0, the second sweep in as many matches for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
GWU improves to 2-0 on the year with the win over the Flying Fleet. This is the second time this week that Gardner-Webb did not drop a singles or doubles match.
In doubles play it was sophomore Catherine White and freshman Sarah Rieckmann at the No. 3 slot who captured the first win of the day for GWU, defeating the Erskine team of Weaver/Yodice convincingly 8-1.
Pairing up again at the No. 2 doubles position to gain the win for Gardner-Webb was junior Rokia Sacko and sophomore Teodora Stanciu who won 8-5 over the team of Goyette/Polk securing the doubles point in today's match for GWU.
The No. 1 doubles pairing for the Runnin' Bulldogs consisted of senior Yasmin Doost and freshman Stina Magnusson who played a tough doubles match versus McDonald/Elliot of Erskine winning in a tiebreak 8-7 (7-5) to complete the sweep in doubles play.
Doost would go on to win her singles match as well in a match tiebreak 4-6, 6-4 (10-6) over Sarah McDonald fighting hard at the No. 1 singles position. Sacko won her match at 5-0 in the first set after Mika Goyette had to retire defaulting the match due to injury.
From there on in singles play Gardner-Webb really was firing on all cylinders. Magnusson won her No. 3 singles match in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Rieckmann won her No. 4 singles match in easy fashion 6-0, 6-0. White at the No. 5 slot finished her opponent off 6-0, 6-1 and sophomore Mary Walker Mixon won her No. 6 singles match 6-0, 6-3 to round out the Runnin' Bulldog lineup and complete the match sweep of Erskine.
The GWU women's tennis team will take a bit of time off before returning to action next Thursday, February 12th when they will play host to Elon University in Boiling Springs, N.C. The match is set to start at 2:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
