SPARTANBURG, S.C- The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team compiled their second consecutive victory defeating USC Upstate 6-1 this afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex in Spartanburg, S.C.
With the victory this afternoon GWU moves to 5-5 on the year improving to the impressive record of 5-2 in non-conference play, while the Spartans dropped to 2-8 with the loss.
Gardner-Webb started off the match in solid fashion winning at No. 2 doubles with Rokia Sacko and Mary Walker Mixon beating the Upstate team of Zoskel/Vande Berg 8-4. GWU secured the doubles point by winning at No. 3 doubles through the team of Catherine White and Sarah Rieckmann who defeat Deshmukh/Roell of Upstate 8-5.
Moving into singles play the Runnin' Bulldogs continued their good form dropping only one of their six singles matches. Sophomore Catherine White was the first to win for GWU in singles play and totaled White's seventh singles win this season. White took down her opponent Sharlee Deshmukh in her No. 5 singles easily in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.
Fellow sophomore Mary Walker Mixon was the next win for Gardner-Webb as she defeated Sarah Vande Berg 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. GWU would then fall at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-0 with Isabel von Stryk defeating Yasmin Doost.
After the loss Gardner-Webb would go on to win at the No. 3, 4 and 2 singles positions closing out the match and the 6-1 team victory. Freshman Stina Magnusson and Sarah Rieckmann both won tough three-set matches at No. 3 and 4 singles. Magnusson won over Anna Zoske 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 and Rieckmann defeated Nina Roell 3-6, 6-2, 7-6.
Finishing out the wins for the Runnin' Bulldogs was the junior Rokia Sacko. It would also take Sacko three-sets to defeat Nona Ruppert 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 in their No. 2 singles match.
Gardner-Webb will return to the action tomorrow as they travel to Western Carolina to face off against the Catamounts trying to keep their successful non-conference record intact. The match is set to begin with doubles play at 1:00 p.m. in Cullowhee, N.C.
