CULLOWHEE, N.C.- The Gardner-Webb women's Tennis continued their winning ways by downing the Western Carolina Catamounts 5-2 in non-conference action this afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, N.C.
With the win today GWU completed a perfect week of match play going 3-0 on the week. The wins for Gardner-Webb started this past Wednesday with a victory over NC A&T, followed by a win yesterday over USC Upstate and the three match sweep this afternoon with the 5-2, team victory.
Several different roster changes overshadowed the match this afternoon. Western Carolina was forced to default wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles due to a lack of players, and for Gardner-Webb normal No. 1 in doubles and singles the stalwart senior Yasmin Doost was scratched due to injury before play commenced, which in return moved everyone up a spot in the normal GWU line-up.
In doubles play Stina Magnusson and Mary Walker Mixon dropped their No. 1 doubles match 8-4 to Bettiol/McLinded from WCU, while a new combination of players at No. 2 doubles combining Rokia Sacko with Sarah Rieckmann utilizing bot players talents to win 8-5.
Singles started off with a loss for GWU at No. 3 singles with Rieckmann falling 6-3, 6-1 to Nicole Nielly. Sophomore Catherine White got the ball bouncing GWU's way though picking up a strong 6-4, 6-3 wing at No. 4 singles over Erin Maguire.
Western would square things up again claiming the win at No. 1 singles as Sacko dropped her match 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to Megan McLinden. The Runnin' Bulldogs would bounce back again though as sophomore Mary Walker Mixon defeated Montse Mesalles in a gritty 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-2 three-set No. 5 singles match, while Magnusson only needed straight sets to claim the victory over Shannon Bettiol 7-5, 7-5 in her No. 2 singles match.
The Gardner-Webb Women's tennis team will look to carry over their success from this week of play as they welcome regional rival Wofford to Boiling Springs, N.C. this coming Tuesday March 17 at 2:00 p.m.
