Gardner-Webb Falls To Furman, 10-0, Tuesday Night

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -- Furman freshman Grant Schuermann tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout and Furman plated five runs in the top of the ninth to cap a 10-0 win over Gardner-Webb Tuesday night at John Henry Moss Stadium/Bill Masters Field.

Gardner-Webb (12-9) played its fourth game in four days and was less than 24 hours removed from finishing a 14-inning win at Presbyterian.

Schuermann made his first career start memorable, retiring 24 batters in a row after allowing a two-out single in the first inning. Evan Hyett legged out an infield single in the ninth for Gardner-Webb's second hit of the game, but Schuermann recovered with a strikeout to end the game. The Cincinnati, Ohio, southpaw had worked just 6.2 innings in relief before Tuesday and lowered his season ERA from 10.80 to 4.60 by the end of the evening (seven strikeouts, no walks).

Furman (10-9) got a leadoff double from Griffin Davis in the fourth and an RBI double with one out from Jordan Simpson for a 1-0 lead. The Paladins added a run in the fifth on an RBI single from Davis and plated two in the sixth to take control of the game. Simpson had an RBI single and Cameron Whitehead belted a solo home run to left center to account for that scoring.

Davis pushed the lead to 5-0 in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly and the Paladins saved their big inning for the ninth, plating five runs on four hits.

Jeremy Walker (0-1) took the loss for Gardner-Webb, allowing four runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings of work (four strikeouts, two walks). Wil Sellers and Andrew Massey each had a solid inning of relief to keep the 'Dogs within range going into the ninth.

Collin Thacker (1-for-3) had the first-inning single for Gardner-Webb and Hyett (1-for-1) added a hit in the ninth.

Furman had 15 hits on Tuesday night, led by Simpson (4-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI), Chris Ohmstede (2-for-3, 2 runs), Davis (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Blake Chisolm (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2B, 2 RBI). Nine different Paladins collected at least one hit in the game.

Gardner-Webb will hit the road again this weekend, traveling to face surging Winthrop on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Rock Hill, S.C., for another important Big South Conference road series.
