BOILING SPRINGS N.C.- The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team lost a very hard fought match to Wofford College this afternoon falling in close fashion 4-3 to the Terriers at the Webb Tennis Complex.
With the loss the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to 6-6 overall on the season dropping their first match in the last four they have played, while Wofford moves to 7-5 on the year with the victory.
GWU came out strong in doubles play winning at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-2 as Rokia Sacko and Mary Walker Mixon combined forces to defeat the Terrier team of Kalli Karas/ Lauren Reid. Wofford would then win at No. 2 doubles with Stina Magnusson and Teodora Stanciu dropping that match 8-3 which in return set up a very tight match for the doubles point at No. 3 doubles. Catherine White and Sarah Rieckmann would narrowly edge Taylor Carlson/Samantha Russell to win the doubles point for GWU needing the tiebreak score of 8-7(4) to claim the match for Gardner-Webb.
Singles play this afternoon started out with a default by Gardner-Webb early on. Due to a nagging injury senior Yasmin Doost defaulted her No. 1 singles match to Catherine Martin with the score 2-0 in favor of Martin in the first set, the overall match score was now 1-1.
Gardner-Webb claimed the next two wins of the day with sophomore Catherine White continuing her good form as of late winning her fourth straight singles match defeating Lauren Reid 6-1, 6-1, while the junior Sacko would also win in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 over Wofford's Audrey Coventry giving GWU the 3-1 lead overall.
Gardner-Webb freshman Sarah Rieckmann would then drop her No. 4 singles match to Samantha Russell 6-4, 6-0 squaring the match at 2-2 with two singles matches yet to finish. Mary Walker Mixon after winning her first set 7-6(6) over Mareli Sanchez would lose the next two sets 6-2, 6-3 squaring the match at three all.
It all came down to the No. 3 singles to determine the result of this afternoon's match. GWU freshman Stina Magnusson , who has played well since coming back from an injury suffered two weeks ago, dropped her first set 6-0 to Kalli Karas of Wofford, but Magnusson not giving in fought back to win the second set 7-6(5) before eventually coming up just a little short in the third-set falling 6-3 to Karas who with victory completed the win for Wofford.
Gardner-Webb will look to learn and grow from this afternoon's loss as they try and bounce back in their next match this Friday March 20. The Runnin' Bulldogs will welcome Campbell University to Boiling Springs as the two teams will face off in a very important Conference match.
