BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Sophomore Teodora Stanciu won her match at the No. 6 singles position to clinch the match for Gardner-Webb, 4-3, over Appalachian State University this evening at the Webb Tennis Complex in Boiling Springs, N.C.
Stanciu stepped up big for the Runnin' Bulldogs this evening after dropping her first set 6-2 to Appalachian State's Meagan Mullen she responded with commanding 6-3, 6-2 wins in her second and third sets respectively. The singles win for Stanciu this evening was the first of her collegiate career.
Gardner-Webb started the afternoon off by winning the doubles point over the Mountaineers with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles securing the point and taking the 1-0 match lead. Rokia Sacko and Stanciu teamed up at No. 2 doubles to win 8-3 over Appalachian's team of Mullen/Machado, while Catherine White and Sarah Rieckmann joined forces to defeat the team of Wreder/Zupan 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play senior Yasmin Doost playing at No. 1 singles dropped her match 6-1, 6-0 to Appalachian's Clare Cox evening the overall match score at 1-1 between the two teams. Next to finish for GWU at No. 5 singles was Mary Walker Mixon who dropped her match 6-1, 6-1 to Melissa Machado giving Appalachian State the slight 2-1 advantage in the match.
Sophomore Catherine White then collected a win at No. 4 singles defeating Gabrielle Wreder in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(6) tying the match back at 2-2 overall. Junior Rokia Sacko would also win in straight sets in her singles match playing No. 2 singles and beating Mackenzie LaSure swiftly 7-6(1), 6-1 edging the match back in GWU's favor 3-2 overall.
Freshman Sarah Rieckmann took the loss in a hard fought match against Brianna Armellino at No. 3 singles 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 which evened the match yet again at 3-3 setting up the exciting finish and win for the Runnin' Bulldogs through the play of Stanciu at the No. 6 singles position.
Head Coach Jim Corn had this to say about his teams play this evening, "I am really proud of the girls. They scrapped out there today and gave it all they had. As a coach that is all you can ask from the girls to give their all."
The Gardner-Webb women's Tennis team will return to play this Thursday, March 5th as they open up their Big South Conference season playing host to Longwood University. The match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Webb Tennis Complex in Boiling Springs, N.C.
