
Men's Tennis Defeated By Winthrop University, 6-1

ROCK HILL, S.C.- The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team lost, 6-1, to Big South opponent Winthrop University yesterday afternoon at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Runnin' Bulldogs early dropped the doubles point to the Eagles by losing at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Junior Nikita Zverkov and senior Ernest Alberch fell 8-3 at No. 1, while senior Brendan Dempsey and junior Jonathan Walker also fell 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.
GWU would go on to claim the win at the No. 3 doubles position with Bejamin Kaszas and Yaroslav Prostakov combining efforts to win 8-6 over the Winthrop team of Chen/Ryan.
Gardner-Webb played gritty in singles play even though they only picked up one win from the six matches. Red-shirt senior Korhan Ates playing at No. 5 singles would be the lone win for Gardner-Webb yesterday as he defeated Michael Chen 6-1, 6-4.
Kaszas would drop his No. 1 singles match by a final set score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, to Tremayne Mitchell, while Zverkov playing at No. 2 singles would fall 6-0, 6-0 to a very good player in Dylan Comeford from Wintrhop.
Alberch playing at No. 3 singles put up a strong fight winning the first set 7-6, but then would drop a hard fought second set 7-5 to Steven Patrick and eventually fall 6-4 to Patrick in the third and final set. Fellow senior Dempsey would also play strong in the first set winning 7-5 over Peter Nagovnak before losing 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.
The lone freshman in Gardner-Webb's lineup Prostakov rounded out the singles play for GWU losing at the No. 6 singles position to Ruben Franzanti of Winthrop 6-1, 6-4.
With the loss yesterday afternoon Gardner-Webb fell to 6-9 on the season and 1-3 in Big South matches, while Winthrop advanced to 11-4 and 3-0 against Conference opponents.
Up next for Gardner-Webb men's tennis is a match this Tuesday, March 24 versus Limestone College. The match between the Runnin' Bulldogs and the Saints is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
