Four-Run First Inning Propels Presbyterian Past Gardner-Webb Softball

CLINTON, S.C.- Presbyterian College scored four runs in the first inning and Kenzie Loudermelk allowed just four hits over five innings to propel the Blue Hose (14-11, 4-1 BSC) to a 10-1 victory over the Gardner-Webb Softball Team (9-17, 3-6 BSC) in a Big South Conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon.

Jill McLean was a catalyst at the plate for the Blue Hose in the leadoff spot, collecting a hit in all four of her at bats and scoring two runs. Four batters for PC collected two hits on the afternoon, and Shelby Petik drove in three runs, legging out a bases loaded triple to break-open the game in the third inning.

Kellie Beres led the way for the Runnin' Bulldogs with two hits for the game, increasing her batting average to .433 on the season.  The senior center fielder continues to be a force at the plate, batting .545 against conference opponents.

Loudermelk sent down the Runnin' Bulldogs 1-2-3 in the top of the first, and Mclean led home of the home half of the inning with a single. She then stole second base and was sacrificed to third base by Jenna Harris. With one out and a runner on third, Petik came up clutch, reaching first base on an error, allowing McLean to score PC's first run of the game. Emily Ruff singled to Darnell, and advanced to second base on a throwing error by Champion, which allowed Petik to get to third base. The Blue Hose then proceeded to record three-straight RBI singles to take a 4-0 lead after one inning of play.

Presbyterian College struck for five additional runs on five hits in the third inning, but GWU would not go down without a fight, as Rachel Cumiskey took a 1-2 pitch and launched it over the left centerfield wall to cut the deficit to nine.

Emily Taylor led off the home half of the fourth with a solo shot, and Loudermelk allowed a two hit single in the fifth, but got Megan Gibbons to ground out to the third baseman to send Presbyterian to the 10-1 victory in five innings.

Gardner-Webb steps out of conference for its next game tomorrow when it travels to Orangeburg, S.C. to face South Carolina State for a doubleheader, slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
