Women's Tennis Suffers 7-0 Loss to Winthrop

ROCK Hill, S.C.- The Gardner-Women's tennis team lost to Big South opponent Winthrop University, 7-0, this afternoon at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Eagles got out to quick start this afternoon sweeping Gardner-Webb at all three doubles positions. Rokia Sacko and Teodora Stanciu fell at No. 1 doubles 8-2, while Mary Walker Mixon and Stina Magnusson took the loss 8-3 at No. 2 doubles and in the last spot at No. 3 doubles Catherine White and Sarah Rieckmann fought hard but still dropped the match 8-6.

The momentum gained by the home squad would carry over into singles play as Winthrop also swept all of the singles matches this afternoon. With senior Yasmin Doost still out due to injury Sacko would move up to play at the No. 1 singles spot today, dropping her match 6-1, 6-3 to Alice Garcia of Winthrop.

Freshman Stina Magnusson lost at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-0 as Ekin Gunaysu from Winthrop took the match, while fellow GWU freshman Rieckmann lost her No. 3 singles match by a score of 6-3, 6-2 to Marianna Humberg.

Stanciu moved up to the No. 4 singles slot due to Doost's injury where Tijana Uzelac defeated her 6-1, 6-4. Rounding out the line-up for Gardner-Webb this afternoon was Catherine White at No. 5 singles where she lost the match 6-0, 6-0, and Mary Walker Mixon at No. 6 singles losing to Camille Amrani 6-1, 7-5.

Up next for Gardner-Webb women's tennis is a match away at Radford University this Saturday, March 28. The match is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. with doubles action.
