Wark's First-Career Complete Game Leads Gardner-Webb Softball To Sweep Of South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C.- Summer Darnell threw a complete-game four-hit shutout and Ashley Wark tossed the first complete game of her career, as the pitching duo led the Gardner-Webb softball team to a sweep of South Carolina State in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

With the victory, Gardner-Webb improves to 11-17 on the season, while South Carolina State falls to 5-11.

Game 1- Gardner-Webb 6, South Carolina State 0

Gardner-Webb got off to a great start in the first, getting a lead-off single by Kellie Beres, who then proceeded to steal second, and advanced to third base on a ground out by Megan Gibbons. Rachel Cumiskey made the most of the runner in scoring position, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Beres to give GWU a 1-0 lead.

Darnell allowed a lead-off single in the bottom of the first, but managed to get three-straight outs to preserve the 1-0 lead for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

The Runnin' Bulldogs had their leadoff batter reach base for a second straight inning on a walk by Megan Champion, who stole second base to advance into scoring position. Savannah Burns was unable to move the runner, as she popped up to the shortstop for the first out, but Jill Blank hit a deep fly ball to centerfield for the second out, but it was deep enough to allow Champion to advance to third base. Champion came around to score the second run of the game for the Runnin' Bulldogs on a passed ball.

Beres notched her second hit of the afternoon with a double to leadoff the third inning, but Gardner-Webb was unable to take advantage of the opportunity, and would continue to hold a 2-0 lead after the third inning.

Champion led-off the fourth with a single, proceeded to steal second base, and advanced to third base on a fly ball to the outfield by Burns. Champion crossed home plate on a single by Blank, who then advanced to second base on an error by the right fielder. Taylar Pridgen recorded an RBI on a fielders choice, and advanced to second on the throw home.

It looked as if the Runnin' Bulldogs were poised for a big inning, scoring two runs and having a runner on second base with just one out, but Beres hit a sharp line drive to the third baseman, who caught the ball and tagged Pridgen out to complete the inning.

Blank hit a one-out single and advanced to second base on a single by Pridgen. Pridgen and Blank moved up one base on a ground out by Beres, and both runners would cross the plate on a two-RBI single by Gibbons to give the Dawgs a 6-0 lead in the sixth.

Darnell got two straight grounds out to begin the seventh, but Deanna Sullivan hit a two-out single and Tamaya Mcqueary walked and S.C. State looked as if it would possibly break the shutout with runners on first and second with two outs. Darnell got Nicole Sanders to line out to Burns, to preserve the shutout, which was the second time she has held the opponent scoreless in her last three starts.

Game 2- Gardner-Webb 4, South Carolina State 3

The Runnin' Bulldogs continued their momentum into the second game of the afternoon, getting a leadoff single by Beres in the top of the first, and the senior stole second base to advance into scoring position with nobody out. Gibbons grounded out for the first out, and Cumiskey walked to put runners on first and second. Beres came around to give GWU a 1-0 lead, when Cumsikey attempted to second second base but was thrown out.

South Carolina State answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning, tying the game at one on an RBI ground out by Charmaine Oden.

Champion walked to lead-off the second and stole second base, but Gardner-Webb could not take advantage of the opportunity as the game would remain tied at one after the second inning.

Beres once again led off the third inning with a single to Cecily Ruiz, and reached third base on a fielding error by the S.C. State pitcher.. Gibbons gave the Dawgs a 2-1 lead with an RBI single to left field, and the junior advanced into scoring position on a ground out by Scarlett Harris. Gibbons advanced 60 feet to third base on a passed ball, but Amanda Gomes was not able to score Gibbons, as GWU continued to hold a 2-1 advantage.

For a fourth straight inning, Gardner-Webb had its leadoff hitter reach base, as Champion doubled to begin the fourth, and she advanced to third base on a ground out by Burns. Champion would come around to score the third run of the game for GWU on a wild pitch. Blank and Beres each drew walks, but the Runnin' Bulldogs could not produce a second run in the inning.

The Runnin' Bulldogs got their fourth run of the game in the sixth on an RBI by Beres, and that would be the score heading into final at-bats of the game for S.C. State.

Jada Richardson singled to lead-off the seventh, and rounded second and advanced to third base on a single by Oden. Deanna Sullivan flied out to right field for the first out of the seventh, but Richardson advanced into scoring position on the long fly out. Petiford popped up for the second out, and down to their final out, Tiara Delaney reached first base on a fielding error by Burns, allowing Richardson to score and Oden to advance to third base. Kabrealyn Coleman brought home the second run of the inning with a single to third base, but Beres threw a bullet to Gibbons, who tagged Delaney for the final out of the game, to send Gardmer-Webb to the 4-3 victory.

The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action next Wednesday when they host Winthrop for a doubleheader at Kings Mountain High School slated for a 4:00 p.m. start.
