Senior Day: Men's Tennis To Honor Three Seniors At This Afternoon's Match

BOILING SPRINGS N.C.- Men's tennis will honor three seniors this afternoon as Gardner-Webb hosts the reigning Conference champions Presbyterian College at 3:00 p.m. at the Webb Tennis Complex.

Seniors Brendan Dempsey, Ernest Alberch and Korhan Ates have all played a pivotal role in the continued improvement of the GWU men's tennis program. Head Coach Mike Griffith had this to say about his 2015 senior class. "These three guys truly love this program and playing for this school."

Dempsey's major highlights for the program came in large part from last year as he was named the 2014 Big South No. 4 Singles Flight Champion going 7-1 in conference last season and accumulating a 17-6 record overall.  Griffith had this to say about him, "Brendan plays with all of his heart and is a fighter. He is one of the few players I have never had to push as a coach. He is always ready to compete and is the consummate professional."

Alberch's career has also been filled with impressive accolades on the court. He was named to the 2014 All-Conference team for his singles play going 8-0 at the No. 3 singles slot finishing with a 12-6 record overall. Griffith said that, "Ernest has played in the top four singles positions all four years he has been here. It takes a very special person to do that. He and Brendan have really achieved success here but have never let that get to them. They are two very special people."

Korhan Ates has had two stints here at Garnder-Webb. He played for Gardner-Webb from 2010-2012 whic saw hi, playing at No. 1 and No. 2 singles over his freshman and sophomore years and playing well for the Runnin' Bulldogs claiming a Flight Championship in doubles his freshman year. He then transferred to UAB for a year before returning back to Gardner-Webb in the 2013-14 season. "For Korhan to return like he did says so much about his love and desire to play for this Gardner-Webb team. He is a solid player and he keeps everything lighthearted and fresh for the whole team."

As Gardner-Webb wraps up its 2014-15 season in the coming weeks Coach Griffith wants his team to remember this. "All three of these players are going to be missed. However, we are not done yet. We still have a lot of goals that we are striving to reach by the end of this season."

Join the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team as they honor these three individuals this afternoon and as they continue their Big South Conference season against Presbyterian College. The match is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. with doubles play.
