Gardner-Webb Win Streak Halted By Holy Cross Wednesday, 8-3

BOILING SPRINGS – Holy Cross scored two runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames and halted Gardner-Webb's win streak at 10 games Wednesday with an 8-3 decision.

Gardner-Webb (10-2) allowed the second most runs it had all season and committed five costly errors in the loss.

Holy Cross (2-8) plated two unearned runs in the third to take the lead for good, and got a two-run home run from Connor Perry to push the lead to 4-0 in the fourth.

Henry Rundio led off the bottom half of the fourth with a solo home run to get Gardner-Webb on the board, and Matt Simmons singled home a run in the same inning to cut the Crusaders' lead in half. GWU would leave two men in scoring position, however, and Holy Cross pushed across two more runs in the fifth to seize control of the game.

Anthony Critelli did the damage with a two-out, two-run double in the fifth. Another unearned run in the seventh and a solo home run by Critelli in the eighth provided the final run total for Holy Cross.

Tyler Best drove in a run in the bottom of the eighth for Gardner-Webb's final tally of the night.

Bradley Hallman (2-1) took the loss for GWU, working 3.0 innings on a pitch count and allowing two unearned runs. The freshman righty fanned four batters and walked one while allowing three hits. The 'Dogs used six pitchers in the game.

Rundio (2-for-4, HR, RBI) led Gardner-Webb's six-hit offensive effort.

Zach Fox (1-2) picked up a relief win for Holy Cross, hurling 3.1 shutout innings and scattering three hits.

The Crusaders had 10 hits in the game, with Critelli (3-for-5, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) posting the most impressive stat line. Nick Lovullo (2-for-3, run) and Perry (2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) also had big days at the plate.

Gardner-Webb will return to action on Friday, playing its first road game at Wofford. First pitch is set for 5:00 pm from Russell C. King Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.

The two teams will play a single game in Boiling Springs, N.C., on Saturday before returning to Spartanburg on Sunday for the series finale.
