CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The first day of field events is complete, and Gardner-Webb's women sit in third position, just six points behind Winthrop in team scoring at the 2015 Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic.
The GWU men are in fourth, just 2.5 points out of third positions themselves. Host Western Carolina leads the team competition on both sides.
The Gardner-Webb women's hammer corps captured three of the top-5 spots on Friday, paced by Krista Chauvin's second-place finish. Chauvin had her three-week win streak snapped Friday, but posted a solid distance of 57.37 meters (188'03") to score eight team points.
Natasha Akbarizadeh finished fourth with a distance of 51.40 meters (168'08") for five team points and Sarah Mitchell posted a personal-record throw of 47.72 meters (156'07") to finish fifth and score four team points.
Ashleigh Cleveland took seventh in the high jump to score two team points for the Runnin' Bulldogs, clearing a personal-record height of 1.57 meters (5'1.75").
Kristen Hurley scored in the women's javelin with a distance of 31.91 meters (104'08"), placing seventh and scoring a pair of team points. It was the second-best throw of Hurley's career in the javelin, just shy of her 32.02m mark set at the Lynchburg College Decathlon in 2012.
Nathan Padfield won the men's hammer event, whipping his next closest competitor by more than six meters. The LaVergne, Tenn., native threw the hammer 56.57 meters (1`85'07") for 10 team points, easily out-pacing the field.
Seaver Wait captured fifth in the men's high jump with a height of 1.85 meters (6'0.75"), scoring 3.5 points for the 'Dogs.
