BOILING SPRINGS --- Monique Martin (Tyngsborough, Mass.) collected a season- and game-high nine draw controls, and four different players scored for Gardner-Webb, as Liberty put together a 9-0 run to close out the first half en route to a 23-4 Big South Conference victory on Friday evening at Spangler Stadium.
Gardner-Webb (0-12, 0-3 Big South) won the battle on the draw, 16-13, as Martin collected nine of the Runnin' Bulldogs' season-high 16 draw controls. Liberty (5-8, 3-0 Big South) scooped up 27 ground balls compared to Gardner-Webb's 17, while converting 15-of-20 clearing attempts and forcing 22 turnovers. The Runnin' Bulldogs forced 16 turnovers by the Flames and converted 8-of-13 clearing attempts.
Alex Fusco (Marietta, Ga.), Amanda Steinmuller (Ellicott, Md.), Emma Rose (Weston, Fla.) and Destiny Mead (Palm Harbor, Fla.) each found the back of the net for the Runnin' Bulldogs, as Brooke Fernandes (Greensboro, N.C.) and Lexi Kasofsky (Gilbert, Ariz.) each scooped up four ground balls. Fernandes forced three turnovers on the night, while Raygan Hall (Cleveland, Tenn.) made 11 saves.
Morgan Becker led the way for Liberty with two goals and six assists, as Kallie Britton added three assists and a hat trick. Courtney Brown scored three goals, while Paige Britton, Olivia Becker, Michaela Rich and Kelly Belue each added two strikes. Belue and Olivia Becker both dished out two assists. Juliann Elmer made eight saves.
Liberty opened the scoring with three goals in the opening seven minutes, taking an early 3-0 lead before Fusco answered for the Runnin' Bulldogs with her third of the season at the 22:22 mark. After the Flames countered with two strikes, Gardner-Webb answered with two of its own, trimming the margin back to two with 16:50 left in the first half following goals from Steinmuller and Mead.
The Flames would respond with nine goals in the final 15 minutes of the first half, pushing the margin to 14-3 at the break. Liberty added four in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, and four in the final 15, as Rose scored late for the Runnin' Bulldogs to notch her seventh of the season.
Gardner-Webb is back in action on Sunday when the Runnin' Bulldogs host Longwood at 1:00 pm at Spangler Stadium.
