FARMVILLE, Va.- Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Longwood's Casey Lifsey's hit a solo blast to tie the game at four and Justina Augustine followed with a walk-off home run to send the Lancers to the first of two victories on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers won game two of the doubleheader 9-1 in five innings, and with the victory improve to 19-21 overall and 13-4 in Big South Play, while Gardner-Webb drops to 11-26 and 3-13 in the BSC.
Game 1- Gardner-Webb 4, Longwood 5
Kellie Beres singled to lead-off the game for the Dogs in the first, and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Megan Gibbons. Gardner-Webb had a chance to take the lead, but Rachel Cumiskey grounded into a fielders choice and Scarlett Harris grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.
Longwood looked as if it would score the first runs of the game, putting runners on second and third with nobody out, but Ashley Wark recorded three straight ground outs to end the inning, as the game remained deadlocked at zero after one inning of play.
Savannah Burns hit a one out single in the second, and Breanna Blakley followed with an RBI double to give GWU a 1-0 lead. Blakley advanced to third on the attempted throw to home plate. Jill Blank was hit by a pitch, giving the Runnin' Bulldogs runners on first and third, but Taylar Pridgen and Beres each grounded out to end the inning.
The score would remain the same until the fourth inning when the Runnin' Bulldogs would come to bat. Blank hit a one out single, but Pridgen hit a ground ball to the Longwood pitcher, who fired it to second for the second out of the inning. Beres extended the inning with a single up the middle and Gibbons followed with a three-run bomb over the left field wall to extend the GWU lead to 4-0 headed into the fifth inning.
McCarthy sent the Dogs down 12-3- in the fifth, and still trailing 4-0, Carly Adams gave the Lancers some life with a single to begin the home-half of the fifth. Katie Shinrock flied out to left field for the first out, but Casey Lifsey smashed a two-run shot over the outfield wall to cut the defecit in half, 4-2.
Gardner-Webb could not record a hit in the sixth, and Wark recorded to straight outs to begin the bottom of the sixth inning, but Glenn Walters homered to left field, and the Lancers would trail 4-3 headed into the last inning.
Cumiskey reached first base on an error by the Lancers, but the Runnin' Bulldogs could not extend their lead, as they would head into the bottom of the seventh leading by a run.
Gardner-Webb head coach Tom Cole brought Sam Harrell to pitch the bottom of the seventh, and the freshman pitcher would face Lifsey to begin the inning. Lifsey tied the game at four with her second home-run of the game and Augustine completed the comeback victory for the Lancers, hitting a walk-off home run to send Longwood to the 5-4 victory in the first of two games on the afternoon.
Wark pitched six strong innings for GWU, allowing three earned runs over six innings, but Elizabeth McCarthy pitcked up her 14th win of the season tossing the complete-game and striking out six.
Offensively, Beres was 2-4 with a run out of the leadoff spot for the Dogs, while Gibbons recorded two hits in her three plate appearances and drove in three runs on her fifth home run of the season.
Game 2- Gardner- Webb 1, Longwood 9 (5 innings)
Longwood continued its momentum into the second game as Augustine led off the first with a solo blast to left center and Walters and Jamie Barbour each recorded an RBI, as the Lancers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
Scarlett Harris singled in the second, and Blakey drew a two-out walk, but Blank popped out to end the inning to send the game into the bottom of the second.
Augustine drove in her second run of the game, hitting a single up the middle, and after an Emily Murphy ground out, Megan Baltzell hit a two-run home run to extend the Lancers lead to 6-0. The home run for Baltzell was the 58th of her career, and ties her with Jessica Moore of Liberty for the most career home runs in Big South History.
Harris broke the shutout for GWU hitting an RBI double in the fourth inning, but Emily Murphy hit a solo home run in the fourth and Austine ended the agme with an RBI single in the fifth to send Longwood to the 9-1 victory.
The two teams return to action tomorrow for the third game of the three-game series. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
