RADFORD, VA. - Gardner-Webb women's tennis in their last match of the 2015 regular season lost to Radford University by a score of 4-3, at the Radford University Tennis Complex in Radford, Va.
Gardner-Webb (8-12, 2-7 Big South) collected three singles wins and added one doubles victory today but came up just short to Conference opponent Radford (6-11, 3-6 Big South).
Gardner-Webb played three very tight doubles matches today but only collected a win at No. 2 doubles, as Magnusson/Mixon were victorious in a tiebreak 8-7(4) over Newman/Fair.
By the time the doubles match finished at No. 2 Radford had already claimed wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to earn the overall match point. Radford's Sayer/Valls beat GWU's Sacko/Stanciu 8-4 at No. 1, and then clinched the point as Saver/Napolitano of RU took down Gardner-Webb's White/Rieckmann 8-5.
Gardner-Webb continued to play singles well but all three of their wins today came after Radford had already clinched the match. Freshman Sarah Rieckmann got a confidence boost this afternoon defeating Taylor Fay 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
Sophomore Catherine White added her 14th singles victory on the season winning at the No. 5 singles slot in a tough three-set match 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, over Meg Napolitano.
Gardner-Webb's final singles victory of the day came from the other freshman in the singles lineup Stina Magnusson. Magnusson played very well this afternoon in tight sets defeating Gemma Vells 7-5, 7-6(5) at No. 3 singles.
At the on set of singles play Radford picked up three quick victories to claim the match as Taylor Newman defeated Yasmin Doost at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1, while at No. 6 Gracie Sayer won over Mary Walker Mixon 6-1, 7-6(1), and Natalie Sayer defeated Rokia Sacko at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-4.
The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team will now set all of their focus on the 2015 Big South Conference Tournament. The Tournament this year is hosted by UNC Asheville and is set to commence with first round play this coming Wednesday, April 15 in Asheville, N.C.
