ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Freshman Stina Magnusson playing at No. 3 singles clinched a 4-0-match victory for Gardner-Webb over Presbyterian College this morning at the 2015 Big South Women's Tennis Championships hosted at the Asheville Racquet Club in Asheville, N.C.
Gardner-Webb started the match off strong this morning winning the doubles point by collecting wins at the No. 2 and No. 1 positions. The No. 2 doubles GWU team of Magnusson and sophomore Mary Walker Mixon defeated Presbyterian's of Andrews/Nuttal 8-1, while junior Rokia Sacko and sophomore Teodora Stanciu claimed the point with and 8-4 win over deLoach/McBride at No. 1.
The Runnin' Bulldogs worked very swiftly in singles play this morning as the No. 1-3 singles positions all won in straight sets to secure the match in favor of Gardner-Webb.
At No. 1 the lone senior on the Gardner-Webb roster Yasmin Doost defeated Presbyterian's Brittany Nuttall 6-0, 6-4 took give GWU a 2-0 advantage on the scoreboard. The junior Sacko would then win 6-4, 6-2 over Demi Henschel at the No. 2 singles slot setting up Magnusson for the match clincher.
To claim the win Magnusson defeated Claire Mitchell Andrews by set scores of 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles allowing Gardner-Webb to advance to the Championship Quarterfinals tomorrow.
The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team faces off against No. 1 Seed Charleston Southern tomorrow morning in the 2015 Big South Women's Championship Quarterfinals. The Quarterfinal match is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. with doubles play at the Asheville Racquet Club.
