BUIES CREEK, N.C.- Rachel Cumiskey hit her seventh home run of the season and the Runnin' Bulldogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Julia Callicutt struck out nine over seven innings to lead Campbell to the 3-2 victory over the Gardner-Webb softball team in the final game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Littlejohn Stadium.
With the victory, Campebll improves its overall record to 23-25 and 5-15 in Big South Play, while Gardner-Webb falls to 12-29 and 4-16 in conference action.
Both squads went down in order to begin the game in the first, but Amanda Gomes drew a two-out and Summer Darnell helped out her own cause, singling through the left side to put two runners on base for the Dogs. Savannah Burns singled to load the bases, and Champion gave GWU a 1-0 lead, scoring on a passed ball.
Katie Baker grounded out for the first out of the second and Campbell's next three batters reached base to load the bases with just one out. Darnell struck out Erica Johnson for the second out of the inning and would escape the jam as Maggie Christopher grounded into a fielders choice to end the inning.
Gardner-Webb continued to hold the 1-0 advantage headed into the bottom of the fifth. Maggie Christopher lined out to begin the inning, but Camise Patterson tied the game at one hitting a solo home run to left field.
Cumiskey answered back and gave GWU the lead once again 2-1, hitting a solo home-run for a second straight day, and the Runnin' Bulldogs headed to the bottom of the inning holding the slim one-run lead.
Katie Baker walked to begin the home-half of the sixth and Brittany Bruce tied the game at two with an RBI double to left center. Baileu Bjorson followed with an RBI single to center field to send Campbell to the 3-2 victory.
Gardner-Webb returns to action on Wednesday afternoon, when it takes the short trip to Rock Hill, S.C. to face Winthrop for a single game scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.
