Campbell Outlasts Gardner-Webb In Rainy Big South Clash

BUIES CREEK, N.C. --- Cassidy McDowell (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored her first collegiate hat trick, Raygan Hall (Cleveland, Tenn.) made 14 saves, and Gardner-Webb set a season-high with nine goals as Campbell outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs, 10-4, in the second half to pull away for a 20-9 Big South Conference win on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Gardner-Webb (0-15, 0-5 Big South) scooped up a season-high 28 ground balls on the day, while also converting 9-of-13 clear attempts and controlling 14 draws. Campbell (5-11, 2-4 Big South) controlled 17 draws and converted 16-of-18 clearing attempts, as the Camels also recorded 37 ground balls.

McDowell paced the Runnin' Bulldogs with three goals on four shots, as Alex Fusco (Marietta, Ga.) and Monique Martin (Tyngsborough, Mass.) each added two strikes. Lindsey Lippert (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Emma Rose (Weston, Fla.) both chipped in a goal, while Fusco and Bryn Hubbard (Annapolis, Md.) each tallied an assist.

Hall made 14 saves, caused two turnovers and scooped up a game-high six ground balls, while Lippert and Fusco controlled four and three draws, respectively. Martin, Lippert and Destiny Mead (Palm Harbor, Fla.) each caused two turnovers.

Loren Day led the way for Campbell with five goals and three assists, while Rebecca Sheinfeld added four strikes on seven shots. Erica Hitch chipped in three goals and three assists, as Kaki Armiger tallied two goals.

Erin O'Hara and Hannah Lamb caused five and four turnovers, respectively, while Day, Lamb and Annie Cook each scooped up five ground balls. Meredith Bechler made eight saves as Day controlled a game-high six draws.

Gardner-Webb got off to a strong start, taking an early 1-0 lead through Fusco's first of the day at the 25:34 mark before Campbell responded, scoring six straight to claim a 6-1 advantage with 15:13 left in the first half. The Runnin' Bulldogs would answer with two of their own, trimming the margin to 6-3 on strikes by Martin and Rose, with Hubbard notching an assist on Rose's goal at the 12:13 mark.

Campbell responded once again with four consecutive goals, widening the gap to 10-3 before McDowell scored twice in the final four minutes of the half, cutting the lead to 10-5 heading into the break.

Lippert kept the momentum going for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the early moments of the second half, trimming the margin further with her eighth goal of the season at the 28:34 mark. Campbell would answer with three strikes, pushing the lead to 13-6 with 25:31 to play following Sheinfeld's third tally of the afternoon.

The Runnin' Bulldogs kept fighting throughout the remainder of the contest, with Fusco and McDowell each finding the back of the net within the following two minutes to cut the lead to 13-8 at the 23:45 mark. The Camels countered with a seven goal surge over the next 17 minutes, opening their largest lead of the day at 20-8 after back-to-back strikes by Day and a final tally by Sheinfeld with 7:05 to play. Martin would cap the scoring in the closing seconds, netting her second of the day and 10th of the season with 19 ticks left.

Gardner-Webb closes out the regular season on Friday, April 24 when the Runnin' Bulldogs host Presbyterian in Big South play at 6:00 pm at Spangler Stadium. The Blue Hose defeated the Runnin' Bulldogs, 18-5, in Clinton, S.C. on March 12 in a non-conference matchup.
