ROCK HILL, S.C. – Gardner-Webb traveled to Winthrop University Wednesday with a limited roster to compete at the 2015 Carolina Cup Meet, and the field events carried the day for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Clay Hamilton and Jordan Smith finished one-two in the men's shot put competition, part of another strong performance from the throws corps overall.
Hamilton's final distance of 14.32 meters (46'11.75") took top honors and Smith followed closely with a PR distance of 14.22 meters (46'8"). Hamilton's distance in the shot put was nearly a full meter past his previous PR, set on April 3 at High Point. Hamilton also finished seventh in the discus (33.92m).
Smith took top honors in the men's hammer with a distance of 50.50 meters (165'8.5"), nearly a full meter longer than his closest competition. The throw by Smith was notable, breaking his previous PR of 40.90 meters by a considerable distance.
Benjamin Sayles took second in the men's long jump, posting a top mark of 6.31 meters (20'8.50"). It was Sayles best mark in his first outdoor season with GWU and was just off the pace of his best of 6.42 meters set during the indoor season.
Matthew Cook took sixth in the javelin (31.13 meters) and finished fifth in the 800m run (2:11.16). Cook's time in the 800m was a new personal record.
On the women's side, Sarah Mitchell won the discus with a distance of 39.94 meters (131'0.75") and Diamond Reese (37.07m) finished sixth. Reese bettered her PR by more than a meter in the discus and captured fifth in the women's shot put with a distance of 11.70 meters (38'4.75"). Kristen Hurley (7th, 11.07m) and Moriah Mason (8th, 10.31m) also competed in the shot put competition.
Mitchell was second in the hammer with a distance of 45.79 meters (150'3"), but was the top collegiate finisher on the day.
On the track, Marquel Woodard placed fourth in the men's 400m dash, crossing the line in 50.04 seconds. He was joined in the race by Josh Parks (51.81 seconds), who finished eighth and Aaron Cronk (52.84 seconds), who took 10th. Cronk set a new PR with his time.
Woodard (7th), Parks (8th) and Cronk (11th) also stepped out of their normal mid distance range to compete in the 200m dash Wednesday.
Claire Cates finished third in the women's 3,000m run, crossing the finish line with a new outdoor PR of 10:36.92 – which also topped her previous overall mark of 10:49.11. Michaela Williams (13:26.69) finished eighth in that race.
Kristen Hurley, one of the top multi athletes in the Big South again in 2015, had a busy day of competition Wednesday. Hurley finished fifth in the women's high jump with a height of 1.49 meters, finished third in the long jump (4.97m), finished seventh in the shot put with a PR distance (11.70m) and 10th in the 100m hurdles (15.68 seconds).
