Softball Drops Wednesday Twin-Bill To Furman In Regular-Season Finale

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Rachel Cumiskey hit her eighth home run of the season and Ashley Wark tossed a complete-game allowing just three earned runs, but the Gardner-Webb softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Furman in the final regular-season doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Crest High School.

The Runnin' Bulldogs dropped the first game of the doubleheader 11-2 and fell in the second game of the afternoon by a 3-1 margin.

With the victories, Furman improves to 28-21 overall, while Gardner-Webb ends its regular-season with a 14-33 overall record.

Jill Blank led the way offensively for the Dogs, collecting three hits in her five plate appearances, and Savannah Burns, Amanda Gomes, and Cumiskey each drove in an RBI for GWU.

Game 1- GWU 2, Furman 11

Furman got off to an extremely quick start as Ambree Miller was the first batter of the game, and gave the Paladins a 1-0 lead with a solo home run off GWU starter Sam Harrell.

Gardner-Webb however would answer back in the bottom of the inning, as Kellie Beres tied the game at one on an RBI single by Gomes, and both teams would be tied at one headed into the second inning.

Harrell sent down the first two batters in the second, and it looked like the Paladins would go down in order, but Taylar Collins took a pitch and sent it over the left field fence to give Furman a 2-1 lead.

Furman continued the hot hitting and launched two more home-runs in the third to complete a four-run third inning.

Cumiskey plated GWU's second run of the game with a solo home-run in the fifth inning, but Furman launched a two-run home run and scored three additional runs in the seventh to defeat the Runnin' Bulldogs 11-2 in the first game of the afternoon.

Game 2- GWU 1, Furman 3

Gardmer-Webb and Furman remained tied at zero until the third inning when Serara Bishop doubled with two-outs and Taylor Jenkins followed with an RBI single to give the Paladins a one run lead.

An inning later, Gomes doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. She would tie the game at one, scoring on an RBI single by Burns.

Furman added a run in the fifth and seventh inning, and Alexa Sappington allowed just one hit over the final three inning as Furman would complete the sweep, winning the second game of the afternoon 3-1.

Gardner-Webb will now turns its attention to the Big South Tournament which starts next Thursday and concludes on Sunday, with the winner receiving the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
