BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.- Junior Rokia Sacko and sophomore Catherine White collected Gardner-Webb's two singles wins this afternoon as the Runnin' Bulldogs fell by the score of 5-2, to the Liberty University Flames in Big South action at the Webb Tennis Complex.
GWU with the defeat is now 7-9 overall on the 2015 season falling to a Conference record of 1-6, while the Lady Flames of Liberty improved to 17-4 on the year and are now 7-2 in conference matches.
White and Sacko were the last two matches to finish up for Gardner-Webb in today's match. Both players would win in match tiebreaks as White won at No. 4 singles defeating Brittany Yang 7-5, 3-6, 11-9, while Sacko would finish up her No. 1 singles match against Belen Rivera with set scores of 6-4, 5-7, 11-9.
Liberty Swept doubles play this afternoon as GWU's Sacko/Stanciu lost to Khval/Yang 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, while Magnusson/Mixon at No. 2 doubles took the 8-5 loss to Crist/Thong and White/Rieckmann lost 8-5 at No. 3 doubles against Groeneveld/Rivera.
Moving into singles play the away side would use the momentum gained in doubles to control the first four singles matches. Gardner-Webb freshman Sarah Rieckmann fell to Evangeline Crist 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Next to finish was No. 5 singles as Teodora Stanciu lost her match in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 to Liberty's Nicola Wellman, followed by sophomore Mary Walker Mixon dropping her No. 6 singles match to Emily Goeneveld 6-3, 6-2.
The second freshman in Gardner-Webb's lineup Stina Magnusson would also fall in straight sets, as she fell to Maria Khval of Liberty 6-1, 6-3.
As the Gardner-Webb women's tennis season winds down the Runnin' Bulldogs have only three matches left this year all to be played this coming week. The first of the final three will be this coming Monday, April 6 as GWU welcomes in UNC Asheville for a big Conference matchup set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
