HIGH POINT --- A pair of Gardner-Webb men's basketball players were named to the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association All-State Team, with Jerome Hill (Adel, Ga.) earning a spot on the first team and Tyrell Nelson (Charlotte, N.C.) garnering second team honors, announced NCCSIA officials this week.
Gardner-Webb is one of three schools with multiple honorees, joining North Carolina Central (Jordan Parks, Nimrod Hilliard) and Big South Conference foe High Point (John Brown, Devante Wallace) with two selections each.
The Runnin' Bulldogs posted the program's second 20-win season in the school's Division I era this spring, compiling an overall mark of 20-15 while advancing to the semifinal round of the Big South Tournament, where they fell to eventual champion Coastal Carolina, 73-70. Gardner-Webb's banner season included several highlight wins, most notably a pair of victories of major conference foes Clemson (ACC) and Purdue (Big Ten).
Hill put together a stellar season for the Runnin' Bulldogs, setting several program and Big South records, and finishing the campaign as the only player in the conference to average a double-double with 18.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. The junior forward went to the free throw line more than any other player in Big South history this season, setting single-season league records for both free throws made (216) and attempted (344).
A two-time Big South All-Conference selection, Hill finished his career ranked second on the program's Division I scoring list with 1,292 points. Hill also ranks seventh on the school's all-time rebounding list with 764 career boards.
Nelson has built upon a strong freshman season and blossomed into the other half of a lethal inside combination alongside Hill, concluding the regular season ranked second on the team in both scoring (13.9) and rebounding (6.5). The Charlotte, North Carolina native led the Big South with a superb 60.9 percent clip from the floor, which ranked seventh in the nation.
A member of last season's Big South Conference All-Freshman Team, Nelson shined in the Runnin' Bulldogs' trip to Colorado in the College Basketball Invitational, sinking each of his 10 field goal attempts and going 7-for-9 at the line to post a career-high 27 points.
Gardner-Webb is expected to return six letter-winners from this year's squad, including rising seniors Herve Aholode (Cotonou, Benin), Isaiah Ivey (Georgetown, Ky.), Harold McBride (Bronx, N.Y.), Dylan Poston (Myrtle Beach, S.C.), and Adonis Burbage (Orlando, Fla.).
