BOONE, N.C.- Red-shirt senior Korhan Ates and freshman Yaroslav Prostakov both claimed singles wins for Gardner-Webb this afternoon as the Runnin' Bulldogs were defeated by Appalachian State University by a score of 5-2, at the Varsity Tennis Courts in Boone, N.C.
The defeat today now marks Gardner-Webb with a 8-11 overall record on the season heading into their last two Conference matches of the year, while Appalachian State now hold onto a 9-11 record.
Ates playing in the No. 4 singles position defeated Zach Bost 6-4, 7-5 in a strong match for him, while Prostakov broke out of a little late season drought defeating Jan-Willem Kleynhans at No. 5 singles in three sets 6-0, 2-6, 6-4.
At No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively Nikita Zverkov and Benjamin Kaszas both fell in straight-sets 6-2, 6-1. Zverkov matched up against Oliver Casey with Kaszas dropping his match to Scott Webster.
Senior Brendan Dempsey and junior Jonathan Walker were the other two Runnin' Bulldogs to be defeated this afternoon. Dempsey lost to Jack Maddocks 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles and Walker was defeated at No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-1 by Trey Morris.
In doubles play Gardner-Webb picked up a match but fell overall to Applachian State. Zverkov/Ates teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles by a score of 7-5 over Kleynhans/Bost.
At No. 2 doubles Kaszas/Prostakov took the loss against Maddocks/Webster 7-5 the team of Dempsey/Hogan rounding out the GWU doubles lineup with a 6-3 loss to Casey/Morris at No. 3 doubles.
With only two Big South Conference matches left in the regular season for Head Coach Mike Griffith's team GWU will look to bounce back and finish the year strong. The men's tennis team will play again tomorrow versus UNC Asheville in their last home match of the year wit the match set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
