Warner's Four-Hitter Sparks Gardner-Webb To 6-0 Win Over Longwood Sunday

BOILING SPRINGS – Senior southpaw Mitch Warner tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout Sunday afternoon to lead Gardner-Webb to a 6-0 win over Longwood.

Warner (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg HS) started strong, sitting the Lancers down with only four pitches in the first inning. He worked through some control issues and settled down to finish the game with only 107 pitches – scattering four singles and limiting Longwood (21-28, 9-12 Big South) to a 1-for-10 effort with runners on base.

Gardner-Webb (21-30, 7-17 Big South) jumped on Longwood starter Brandon Vick early, plating a pair of runs in the first on an RBI hit by Collin Thacker and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sam Fulginiti.

Gage Parham drove home Scott Johnson with an RBI single in the second, and the Lancers walked in two runs in the third inning as Gardner-Webb's lead grew to 5-0. Paul Trick doubled to lead off the seventh and scored on Jacob Walker's sacrifice fly for the final margin.

Warner pitched out of trouble in both the second and third innings, but didn't allow more than one hit in any frame. He fanned four batters and overcame four walks – as his defense came up with several nice plays to prevent damage on the scoreboard.

The Runnin' Bulldogs had a fine day at the plate, rapping out 12 hits and coaxing five walks against four Longwood pitchers.

Thacker led the way, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and RBI. Ryan Hodge (2-for-5, run), Fulginiti (2-for-3, 2B, RBI) and Johnson (2-for-3, RBI, run) also had multiple hits.

Vick (2-7) took the mound loss for Longwood, lasting just 2.0 innings and allowing five runs on six hits (two walks). Allen Ellis (0.2 IP), Ryan Jones (3.2 IP) and Devin Gould (1.2 IP) closed out the game without allowing an earned run.

Four different Lancers accounted for their four hits. Brandon Harvell (1-for-4), Kyri Washington (1-for-3), Connar Bastaich (1-for-4) and Michael Osinksi (1-for-4) collected those safeties.

Gardner-Webb will wrap up its 2015 season next week, traveling to play UNC Greensboro on Thursday and hosting the Spartans on Friday.
