Moffatt's School Record Vaults GWU Women Into Fourth At 2015 Big South Outdoor Championships

FULL MEET RESULTS THROUGH DAY 2 (PDF)

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Elise Moffatt set a new school record in the women's pole vault Friday, winning an individual title to lead a strong effort for Gardner-Webb Friday on the second day of the 2015 Big South Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Moffatt won her championship in style, clearing a height of 3.85 meters to outpace the rest of the field by six inches. Teammate Megan Melton scored in the event as well, finishing sixth with a height of 3.70 meters – which smashed Melton's previous personal record in the event.

Kristen Hurley also earned All-Big South Conference honors Friday, taking second in the Heptathlon with the highest point total of her career. The Columbia, Conn., graduate student earned outdoor All-Big South honors for the fourth time in the process, totaling 4,749 points to finish only 120 points behind champion Erika Jackson of Liberty.

Hurley moved into her position with a fine Friday, winning the long jump with a leap of 5.51 meters (18'1"), which broke her personal record in the discipline. She also won the final event – the 800m run – with a personal-record time of 2:24.75. That time was two seconds faster than her closest competitor.

Kayin Mujahid joined Hurley and Moffatt with All-Big South Conference honors, taking second in the women's high jump Friday. She cleared a height of 1.65 meters and posted eight team points in the process.

The distance duo of Claire Cates and Jenna Ford narrowly missed All-Big South range, but each posted significant PR times in the 3,000 meter Steeplechase. Cates finished fourth with a personal record time of 11:22.86 and Ford was close behind in sixth. Ford beat her previous personal record by more than 30 seconds, clocking a time of 11:37.88.

Thrower Sarah Mitchell scored again for GWU Friday, this time in the women's shot put. The standout sophomore finished sixth with a distance of 13.30 meters, scoring three valuable team points for Gardner-Webb.

By day's end, Gardner-Webb had accumulated 45.5 team points on the women's side, good for fourth position heading into the final day of competition at Vert Stadium.

The men's squad found itself just three points out of the top-5 after Friday's action, scoring 17 points.

Jordan Smith continued to rise in the ranks of Big South throwers, putting another All-Big South Conference performance together in the shot put. Smith, a sophomore who earned All-Big South honors indoors this season, finished second in the shot put Friday with a mark of 16.00 meters.

Smith's effort was inches shy of his personal record of 16.01 meters, which he established in April at Appalachian State. Clay Hamilton reached back and posted a personal record of his own Friday in the same event, scoring one team point in eighth place with a toss of 14.61 meters.

Seaver Wait flew high Friday, setting a new outdoor PR in the high jump with a height of 1.96 meters. That mark was good for sixth place in the final standings and earned the Runnin' Bulldogs three more team points.

Decathlete Ben Bell was eyeing All-Big South honors Friday as well, but finished just out of range in fourth place. Bell did post a personal best in the event, scoring a career-high 6,313 points over two days. The highlight of his effort Friday came on the track, when he blazed a PR time of 4:37.67 to finish second in the 1,500 meter run.

Freahman standout Marquel Woodard qualified for Saturday's finals in the 800m run prelims, finishing with the day's second-fastest time. The Gainesville, Ga., native crossed the line in 1:54.98 and will go for All-Big South honors on the final day of action.
