Gardner-Webb Blanks Campbell, 5-0, Saturday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS – Matt Fraudin and Brad Haymes combined for a five-hit shutout, as Gardner-Webb blanked Campball, 5-0, Saturday afternoon at John Henry Moss Stadium/Bill Masters Field.

The win snapped a 12-game Big South losing streak for the Runnin' Bulldogs (20-27, 6-14 Big South).

Fraudin struck out 11 batters in 7.1 shutout innings, scattering five hits in a very strong performance against the Fighting Camels (26-19, 9-11 Big South). He retired the first 13 batters he faced – including seven via strikeout and six on ground balls – before allowing a double with one out in the fifth.

Gardner-Webb took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, getting hits from Collin Thacker and J.D. Huggins and an error to load the bases with one out. Scott Johnson's sacrifice fly plated Thacker and put GWU in front for good.

The 'Dogs added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, with Johnson beating out an infield hit and scoring on a sharp double by Tyler Best. Ryan Hodge followed with an infield single and Sam Fulginiti executed a squeeze bunt to plate Best for a 3-0 advantage.

Gardner-Webb got an RBI single from Hodge in the seventh to go up 4-0 and Will Canady drove home the final tally with his own squeeze bunt in the eighth.

Campbell mounted a threat in the eighth, getting a double from Brian Taylor and a single from Dustin Krob to put men on the corners with one out – but Haymes came in from the pen to get out of the jam. The Tightsqueeze, Va., native got stellar defensive support from Hodge, who stabbed a line drive at shortstop and doubled off Krob to end the inning.

Haymes needed only seven pitches to retire the Camels in order in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.

Fraudin (4-4) won his fourth decision of the season Saturday, recording 21 of his 22 outs via strikeout or groundout.

Gardner-Webb had nine hits in the game, with Hodge (2-for-4, RBI, SB) and Thacker (2-for-4, run) leading the way. Best (1-for-4, 2B, RBI), Fulginiti (1-for-3, RBI), Huggins (1-for-4), Canady (1-for-3, RBI) and Johnson (1-for-3, RBI) also had hits in the game.

Campbell starter Nick Thayer (5-4) went the distance, allowing only two earned runs on nine hits. The junior righty fanned eight and did not issue a walk.

Four of Campbell's five hits were doubles. Cole Hallum (2-for-4, 2B) had a pair of knocks for the visitors.

Gardner-Webb and Campbell will play the series rubber match on Sunday at 2:00 pm. The game will air live on The Big South Network (bigsouthsports.com).
